I was looking into maybe starting a project of building a hybrid quad with a dirtbike engine, i am probably going to use a 400ex or 250R as the base for the frame since they seem to be the most versatile but i dont know what to use as an engine. i was thinking a crf450 or ktm520 but i want to here your guys input.

ktms parts are crazy in prices plus the motors are hard to find...

if there were so good u'd see people using them...

i've rode all the motors in bike form and i think the crf has the best power... i've rode the ktm 450,520,525 yzf400,426,450 and the crf450 and its the best to me...

if it were me i'd do the crf!

the 520 is suppose to have a massive amount of power, but like they say ktm= keep three mehcanics

id do a crf with 250r geometry

get a JRD frame(250r geometry) and have them put the mounts in for a yz426. I have ridden a few 426s and the power on them is so smooth and awesome.

If it were me I would do a full walsh chassie with a Laeger Pro-trax font end with PEP's all the way around, and nice CRF motor.

the CRF 450 and YZ426 motors seem to be the most popular.

I just wonder when the first Suzuki 450 Hybrid is gonna be made:scary:

I don't agree. I've heard nothing but good things about the KTM (except the availability). If the conversion wasn't so difficult (because the chain is on the opposite side), I bet you'd see a lot more KTM conversions.

We will see a KTM, they had a thing out for a quad frame designer, but its gonna be a while:scary:

Id go Walsh 400ex frame, Walsh arms, PEPs, and a YZF450 engine.

Are you sure the chain is on the opposite side? All the pictures I see of KTM quads the chain is on the same side as everything else.

Maybe I'm retarded. I could SWEAR the last time I looked at a picture of a KTM, the chain was on the right side of the bike instead of the left. I remember, because I was specifically looking to see which side it was on.

Maybe it was Cannondale motorcycle I was looking at, or maybe I was looking at the wrong model KTM. As it turns out, the KTM 625 is the only model with the chain on the right side.

everyone i've seen has been in the shop multiple times...

I must say my buddy has an '01 520 and he has put it through its paces, ride it every weekend and its been nothing but great, no mechanical problems whatsoever for atleast 2 years. He does maintain it religously though.

So I guess reliabilty wise its just luck of the draw.
