Any Thoughts on Reverse?

I was looking around out at service honds and It looks like the difference between a 04 and an 05 transmission is minor. There also is no differnence in the case that I can see. Has anyone tried or herd of putting an 05 tranny in an older model? How do you shift into reverse on an 05? Is it on the existing shift lever or is there a second shifter like the 300's have?

i think its like a raptor and a z400 get in neutral turn knob on right and shift down I THINK not sure i dont own one

Did you cross-reference the case part numbers between the two years? Just wondering...

I posted the same question about two months ago, never really got an answer. I've been told the center case halves are different. I don't know for sure.

I couldn't find a difference. Go out to www.servicehonda.com click on parts>oem hard parts> view all models. I think I'll call them on monday and see if they have anything to say about it. I'm going to have to split my case in the next week or two so I'd like to find out before that.

Ya put it in 1st Gear, pull in the clutch, then twist the knob on the right fender and hold it. Then shift down one more time. But as I found out the reverse rev limiter is a PITA.

I own an 05 400ex and not for nothing, our reverse goes pretty fast compared to my friends raptors. Those reverse are horrendously limited, we can do some decent speed with them

I have an 05 400. sweet bike, i've heard (but im not sure) that the 05 tranny will fit the older bikes. i don't know forsure. and yes the reverse rev limiter really sucks! im getting another rev box from big gun

u would def need a new sidecase because u need to have the lever that the cable pulls to put it into reverse... i think it maybe easier to just find a used 05 motor someones pulling for a hybrid and put that in...

you can NOT put reverse on older models 400ex. it just can't be done. The cases are diffrent. I mean think about it you need one more shaft for reverse. Where would you put it there is no room in a ex case.

So the only way to have reverse would be to get the cases off of a 05 sorry

I just got the official part numbers from service honda.

The 2005 crank case is different.

right side is $155.57 pn#11100-hn1-a40
left side is $188.95 pn#11200-hn1-a40

04 crank case is
right 11100hn1000
left11200hn1010

I'm going to keep digging and find out what the differences are. If I can do this for under 500 or so, I'm definitely going to.

reverse is for..

how much will you accually use it? very VERY little.. enough to require a total rebuild of your motor? doubtful.. i mean if thats you then knock yourself out.. but think about this.. when you will accually use it.. maybe pulling it outta the garage, or off the trailer... bout the only time i can think about that you would use it.. unless you like riding backwards

Or if your about to go off a 10 foot cliff and you cant get off or the quad will fall down. Trust me; I know :)

Or in a canyon. or a Dead-end, but you could just use the canyon walls for your reverse...

This is my opinion so noone get pissed but the 05 400s suck. They are two to three mph slower than the older ones because of the smaller gear box because of reverse. I say spin it around the got the power and the new fenders suck to they look like midget 450s but the new colors are really nice.

well spin it around works good on the trails but if you get stuck in mud or snow reverse would be nice.

Let me know what you find out as I am interested in the mod aswell...and kinda hoping they come out with a reverse kit for em or something...reverse is a def bonus in the bush if ya ask me, even if the bike is fairly light.
