installing a new starter motor

anyone know off hand if i can do it from the shifter side of my 400EX or do i have to remove my pipe to install a new starter motor~ i have a manual but its kinda confusing~ thanks for your help!!

dunno if its the same as the 300, but i replaced my kids without taking the pipe off, but it does help....
