what type gas does everyone run in their stock 400ex?

92 or 93. Just use pumpgas. Some even use 89. Try it and see if it makes a pinging sound and if it doesn't then it doesn't need higher octane.

87 octane is the regular around here.

personally i always use the highest grade, simple because its only a few cents more expensive and i usually end up spending less then 3 bucks to fill it up

I think where you get your gas makes a bigger difference. I know around here I can go to some stations and their gas makes my quad run like $hit and others are not bad. I would reccomend filling at a chevron, shell, maybe even Costco (if they have gas where you live) before Arco or a little mom & pop gas station, just because of the cleaner holding tanks. I always run mid grade and sometimes I get Premium.

You make a good point my friend. I like chevron because 87 has it's own holding tank; 89 has it's own; and 93 has it's own! At other gas stations with only one hose, you run into the problem of getting some of what the last person got. (whatever is left in the hose).

i have a hard time seeing someone actually complain about the quality holding tanks from arco to chevron. they are both huge companies with very similar standards


generally i just believe in staying away from lesser known places and overnight gas stations. the ones around here always look dirt and run down. while arco, chevron, and shell do a great job of keeping things together.
