My friend's 400ex rattles when he shakes it side to side when its off and has a weird noise when at idle, does this mean he has to adjust the valves? or is it something else? any input would be helpful.

If it does it when the bike is not running I doubt it is the valves. Just have him check everything. I bet it is just a loose bolt ratteling or something.

check the engine mounts and a-arms, swing arm ect to see if they are loose:)

If he has a skid plate check the bolts on that too.

check those two bolts by the heat shield cause those are the two that keep coming loose on my 4 wheeler besides that wire that came off the other day and it wouldn't start...

My 99 400ex had the lower shock bushings going out in it, when I'd hop up and down on the frontend you could hear a knocking. New bushings did the trick....
