i am 16 and im about 180lbs. I want to race my 250x... the only engine mod i have is an exhust but i have alot of other mods like a-arms and shocks and rear axle and alot of other stuff... i was thinking about gettin it bored to 265 and then gettin a cdi box? but how it sits now with only an aftermarket exhust on the motor will i be able to keep up with the others while racing motocross?

Depends on what class and also how good of a rider you are. If you can ride you can be competive in the lower classes.

Theres always a beginners class of some sort, its called gaining experience. Dont let anyone tell you no you cant race. You might not be the fastest one out there but youll be getting track time which is what makes you a fast rider in the end.

If you have some balls and some common sense you can kick some *** in the beginner classes, no matter what you are riding. Just ride smart.

dont be worried about winning your first race, it's probably not going to happen. Just come out to have fun and learn....the worst day racing is better than the best day as a spectator..I think confucious said that!!!!!!!!!!!

back in 2001 I saw a rider win a HS race on a stock 250x with a pipe. He also was racing aginst acouple of GNCC A class riders on 400ex's. So yes I can be done.

Yes if you are a good enough rider you can keep up. I won a class at SUNSET RAMBLERS on a Kaw. Mojave, it was the smallest in the class and I won the points series.

I have a friend who has a 250X i know he has an axle and tires/wheels and exhaust, I think that is it. I have seen him race big bore classes and win on it. He raced part of the MX fair series on it and won against so people who used to be professional racers.

EVEN IF YOU CANNOT KEEP UP KEEP RACING YOU WILL GET BETTER AND YOU WILL HAVE FUN

well would it be a good idea to bore my motor before i start and get a performance cdi box?

03-10-2005, 02:07 PM
personally I think it's a good idea to put too much money in the quad you have. I say race it pretty much how it is. HAVE FUN then in a year or so try to get a bigger quad as you get better.

Suspension will make you faster than a motor ever will.

yes i kno... i got 400ex shock on my quad.. i was thinking about gettin yzf450 shocks are they better then 400ex shocks?... i think that once i get a new cdi box and change my gearing i will start racing... what should i change my gearing to for motocross?

Stock Mojave in a Missouri Harescramble. 185 racers, I started in the begginer class and won that and took 25th overall. So if you can ride that 250X you can hold your own. Later, Josh

Race that 250X and get some race experience and then next year if you still want to race move up to a 400 or 450:cool:

Your quad would be competitive with Blasters and 300EX's and if you can ride real well you can compete with the 400's.

I have seen alot of want to be racers with thier expencive quads that cant ride for chit and could be beat on a lt80 so learn to ride what you have to the best of your ability and when your skill surpasses your quad move up to a bigger one. Having a fast quad DOES NOT make you a fast rider. also learn your quad and know its limitations and race smart because MX is no joke you need to have skill to be competitive not the fastest quad.

Have fun be carefull and ride smart:cool:

SHocks are the best and most functional mod bar none!!! $500.00 SHocks will make you faster than a $500.00 pipe. Good luck guys!

This is soooo true!!! I wish I would have gotten shocks first! There is only so much power you can really use while racing for the most part, but with better suspension you can use your power much more effectively.;)

What I would do is go to just 1 or 2 races on your 250x to see if you like racing or not. If you become attached to it then sell it for a bigger quad. The more you race and get beat on a smaller quad, the more you ill get discouraged.

BUt i can say when I started racing local youth produciton on a 250x, no one was ever in my class so i would race B class. BUt i had a stroker motor, extended a-arms, shocks, swinger, eveyrthing....and i can say the yfz's, 400ex's, 250rs would get mad when a 250x beat them...dont count yourself out, anything is possible.

And about your motor, I have had multiple 250x/300ex motors...one of them was a 265. I can say that a 250x will not be very fast unless it is stroked...now you people dont go flaming me...because I have had about 6 different 250x motors in the last year and a half.

If your interested I have a 250x bottom end that is stroked to the size of a stock 300ex, head that has oversized valves, port and polish, and a sparks MX cam, also have the head cover with hardend rocker arms....all you need is Your cylinder, and if you bore it out .80 over you will have a fast 250x! Throw me a PM if oyur interested, I have stiffer clutch springs also..
