03 Z400 wont start with starter, Help Please.

A buddy has an 03 Z400 and it will not start on its own ( with the satrter) but if you pull it it will fire right up instantly. It has great spark, its getting fuel, comp is good and its getting air. Please help.

There are only 3 things required to run an engine as far as I know, Fuel, Air and Spark and it has all 3.

The starter works perfectly, the battery is fully charged too.

if u pull the clutch in? it will start with the clutch pulled in but not out. I think its a safety feature.

The starter wont even turn if you dont pull the clutch.

Does it start if you do? if it does its normal thats how they all are.

It does not start is the problem I am having. Any bike with elctric start requires you to pull the clutch to start it.

The problem was the valve seats are sinking into the head so the valve lash was way too tight. i reshimmed it and away she went.
