Painting my motor?

I want to paint my motor cases, and cylinder. I have heard of people that have used just regular spray paint, and has heald up fine. I will be useing auto motive paint, and my auto body teaches isn't too shure how it will hold up to the heat. I know it will be fine using it on the cases, but there is more heat on the cylinder and will it hold up there?

Also some pic would be nice just for the hell of it.

well you can paint the case with any kind of paint you want. it won't get hot enough to mess up the paint. but for the cylinder the only thing you can use is high temp paint. and by high temp I mean like 1200-1500 derges. I put aluminum paint on my cylinder it looks good and holds up good. don't put any clear coat on the cylinder cause it will turn yellow.

I wouldnt paint the cylinder, it will keep the heat in too much.

I painted my engine with Dupli-Color 1200-1500 degree paint, it's holding up really well. Check 'er out.

do you need primer? cuz when i painted my blaster's frame, i sandblasted it and everything. and after i painted it it would start to flake off and chip easy:confused:

Nope, not with high heat paint. You don't want to primer underneath it. If you do, the primer will break down and cause the paint to flake.

The High heat paint gets it's strength AFTER it's been heated by running the engine. The heat catalyzes(sp) the paint making it similar to ceramic.

The paint actually acts as a heat disperser. I don't know how it works, but it does. :confused: My engine runs just a few degrees cooler now that it's painted.

well the high temp alunimum paint for the cylinder is self priming so you don't need to prime it before. but if you paint the cases with normal paint It would be alot better if you did prime it.

One more question though, someone said that clearcoat on the cylnder would turn yellow, is there any chance of that happening on the cases? I'll go get some high temp paint for the cylnder, but the paint I'm using for the cases is base coat clear coat.

I had some of that high temp paint, and painted my heater right after i started it it bubled. Dont like that stuff. If you have a wesco auto body supply shop near you go there and ask for por 15 i think it is. You have to spary it on with a paint gun, but alot more durable then that other stuff. And do not clear coat the high temp paint, unless they make it. The paint is probably single stage, meaning it has clear in it

yes it is ok to clear the cases. or use a base coat /clear coat paint.

the yellow/orange motor is base/clear. and I didn't have any problems yet

Why would you clear it unless you used a flat paint?

just for extra protection from scraches and stuff.

Well ya it is flat paint, till u put the clear on it. And wont add that much protection if any. I painted my plastics and frame on my quad

man they clear coat cars for a reason.:grr:

and even if it flat till they clear it like you say if it didn't protect why would they bother with flat paint and then clear and nut just a shinny paint the first time around.

If it was that easy I think the car companies would have figured it out by know don't you think?:huh

If not well you could sell them the idea and make a bunch of money. Cause they would save if they only had to do one coat of sinny paint and no clear.:huh

I wasnt sayin clear doesnt protect. i said it doesnt protect anymore if you clear over single stage, because the clear is already in there. you always have to clear a car, if u dont then you are a moron. I know cause my mom owns a autobody shop and i have worked there for 5 years and i know what im talking about.
