2005 400ex is so sweet!

Just bought a brand new 05 400ex, this thing is so sweet. i changed the seat from red to black and it looks soooo much better. this thing has a ton of power, rides and feels good too, plus it has reverse! so sweet, my only questions are for those who have the HRC powerup kit, is it worth it? does it cause heating issues? im thinkin about getting it but im not sure yet. and what would a pipe do for power? whats a loud pipe to get?

HMF makes a good loud pipe and it gives it a good power gain. Also look into White Bros for a good sound and Big Gun if you are wantin somethin loud. Those are my picks for pipes but HMF is my main one. Dont forget to rejet with any slip on or full system. Congrats on the new 400 they are real nice!!

I would say the biggest difference is prolly power and quality. HMF will give you the better of the two whereas Big Gun really just has the loud sound. If i were to tell you which one to get then go with the HMF, thats what I have and its the best system you can get prolly for the price!

I think the quite oppoisite..I've ridded 2 400ex's...same mods..with different pipes..hmf full..and big gun race full...I like the biggun more...better power...better sound..ect...-shrugs- just my opnion. :)

If you plan on riding on public land, then make sure you buy a pipe which will pass the 96db limit Ca. has adopted. Otherwise you'll be bummed when the rangers turn you around and tickets you. Then you'll just have to buy yet another pipe. I know, I'm from Ca. also and I've been there done that. Hope this helps. :)

for the record, the 04 is not faster then the 05, my buddy that I always go riding with has the 04 and I burn him everytime. We're even off the line, and I pull away by 3rd gear. So get over it, and stop the lies! Im glad that you guys like the two round head lights, cause i don't, thats why i have an 05. Go figure, the new bike (05) is better then the old ones. Imagine that....

hate to break your pride but the 05 ex is the same engine and such as the older years,,, if anything the 05 should be slower cause of reverse,,, the plastic dont change the speed and the older EXs DO look better,,, thats the 400ex look,,, the one that is copie by smaller companies,,, its a good look,, the 450r looks good with that plastic but the EX,,, it dont,,, if anything it conuses people cause they see that slow 400 goin and then they see a fast 450r

i got a red 05 400ex too. i love that thing. i put a black seat on mine. it looks so much better. did u guys no that they put bigger carbs on the 04s and 05s. i think from 35mm to 37.5mm. it may not seem like big difference but it helps. they said they changed the gear ratios alittle bit on the 05s too. i love mine. looks good and I can wheelie forever;) honda, nothin but the best! the 04's had a bigger carb than the 03's i saw that on the website last year..and read about it to......

but its the gear ratios mostly and who cares whos faster in a drag anyways....400ex wasnt built for that you wanna drag go get a banshee......

I'm with you, I prefer the Big Gun slip-on over the HMF full exhaust. Much better low end power and a much better sound, quieter than HMF but it has a deeper sound to it.

I don't want to get in the little fight going on. But, If you go to Honda's website they say 38mm carb on both models. They did change the gearing on the two years. As far as the look it is an opinion which is better. And if you want to know which is faster you would need two Brand new machine's. Not one used machine and one new one. Let's stop the fighting and say congratulations to our new honda brother on the purchase. IMO so don't get mad at me. :D

wat the guy before me said. Lets argue about gear ratios and fenders. The 05 cant be much faster if it really does have different gear ratios cuz it dont have the power to pull a higher gear ratio stock. go get a 15 tooth front sprocket and you have an even playing field. $12. wow, just cuz you got an 05 400 dont mean it looks better than everyone elses older exes, thats just your opinion. All it is is a copied 450r. The ex had its look an then honda copied the 450r look trying to switch things up along with the reverse to sell more machines. nothing had changed in like 6 yrs. There you have it.

It's great he got the '05 EX, and I don't want to cause trouble either. But just because you smoke your buddy doesn't mean you'll smoke everyone or that the '05 is faster than the '04. It's all in the rider. IMHO, I am with muddy400EX.. I love the old look and I agree that changing them to all look alike was a little dumb. That's just my opinion and I'm entitled to it. So b1tch all ya want. I got my 400EX and that's all I care about. :D

i have an 04 400ex that is completely stock enginewise and my buddy has had his new 05 for 2 weeks now and has fmf powercore 4 exhaust jetted and k and n filter with lid and we did a 200 yard drag race and i beat him by at least 2 leangths 3 times in a row. and we are really close in riding experience

i dont see why ppl have a problem with reverse.. it sounds like people are saying your a worse rider because of it.. and also I read that no reverse is needed for the track.. well that is true, but the 400ex isnt made for the track anymore, 6 years ago it was the top of the line racing machine but now with the 450's out it is an awsome recreational riding and trail bike, and i think thats why honda put reverse on it because of the fact the people will be using it for the trail, not the track.

look at the new dirt rider, it has an review of the 460 kit (or something like that) basically, they says it rocks! i will look more into the hrc and let you know what i can find out. i know we turned my buddies 400 into an 440 and he loves it!!!

They don't make the hrc kit for the 400ex. The hrc kit you are hearing about is only for the 450r.
I know it's all preference but I also like the older body style to because it gives it a different look from the 450r.

Enough.. I bought my 05 in Sept. My freind bought his 04 just a week earlier. (he couldn't wait) I have done plenty of drags with both of them. From the factory the 04 is a little faster overall. But once you lower the front sprocket to 14 it will pull away faster. The 05 will pull faster off the line with both stock but the 04 catches up fast. Once both are geared the same it's almost dead even. They did change the gear ratios inside a little but it is only to help the 05 remain even with the 04 due to the extra weight.I've ridden both bikes raced both bikes and these no reason to argue about it. All that matters is that we all enjoy having the ex models. However I did have to end up doing a front plastic conversion on my freinds. that is a lie not every bike is the same from the dealer and i toped my 05 out at 69mph on a highway and 04's probably do the same theirs not much difference their both awsome bikes jus different fenders which honda shoulda kept the old look or got a whole new look for the 400ex cuz yes many people have asked me if mine was a 450R and i feal stupid telling them it isnt :D and jus to tell everyone they still have the round bug eyes its jus a little harder to notice im planing on getting some race fenders on mine ne ways so i ain't a look-a-like and race cut may make it a little faster and look better but you all gotta admit honda messed up in the beginning not inculdeing it when 400ex first came out even tho it was a race bike it would of sold more then and i still don't understand why you guys hate on it maybe i don't wanna swing it around when i can jus down shift 2 and turn a lever thingy and honda couldn't jus keep making the 400ex without reverse considering yamaha and kawaski and suzuki have it well i no yamaha does but not sure bout the others i think they do honda had to put it on the 05 so they could sell more

As long as we're riding and keeping the sport going, that's all that matters, not what we ride...and no, Honda is not what we all should be riding. How lame would it be if everyone rode a 400ex and 450R? This is what makes the sport so great right now, the extreme variety of options out there for EVERYONE. And no, Honda does not have the answer to everyone's riding needs.

So all pissing matches aside, I'm sensing that nobody has experience with the HRC kit?

I don't know anything about the kit, but rumor has it that Honda is no longer offering the HRC cam for the 400ex. I found one for my '05, but haven't ridden with it yet.

Will be testing the cam, exhaust, and jet mods this weekend hopefully.
