i'd have to say that the 300ex would be better but for some reason i'd go with a blaster... LOL... i want to race nationals this year but im only 14 so i couldnt race my KFX so i was going to buy a blaster... sorry i couldnt help you out.. sence i kinda went for both...
why are you looking for a 300ex/blaster when you have that BAD ARSE YFZ :eek2: :eek2:

300ex because you you can do more to it and alot of 400ex parts can fit on it i believe:D Goodluck
blaster has a faster motor and if hes a small guy he might like it but it felt stiff and bouncy for me and really hard to ride
300ex is roomy and handles like a smaller version of a 400ex but the blaster can move with some motor mods

I would personally choose the 300ex and here is why. I own a 2003 300ex and my best friend just bought a 2004 blaster and let me tell you the mods before i go any further.
Blaster- fmf silencer and fatty boysen reeds uni air filter durabend axle and works front shocks
300ex-k&N hmf pipe
we are both jetted right and everything and he has 18 inch tires and ue to a buidget i have 20s. so on a mx track my 300 will pull the holeshot on him almost everytime. we have pretty much the same skill and everything. allthough i do have ot say the balsters seem to have an endless rev limiter. but at a local mx race he said he was constantly shifting and clutching to stay in the powerband. so unlike a fourstroke your cousin would have to be a good clutch handler and would want ot be patient to keep in powerband. my 300 was a half lap ahead on the first lap! and another thing is maintenance. the blasters seem to not last as long as the 300s in rebuild wise. a built 300ex or even 250x has a lot more potential than a built blaster. allthough it is cheaper to build a 2strioke quad than it is a 4stroke a forustroke will usually last 4 times as long than a 2 stroke. but hte first and foremost thing to replace on both quads is the suspension and tires.

blaster- cheapem, easier to work, on thousands of mods, quicker, lighter, when built right and with little money will smoke a 400
with the same rider on each quad the blaster should turn better lap times if the rider is small
