how do you correctly check the oil level in a 400ex i have heard many different ways of checking what is your opinion

Have the quad on a level surface.
Warm up the motor and let it idle for a few minutes. Do not rev the motor.
Shut it off and let it rest for about 5 minutes.
Remove the the dipstick.
Clean it off.
Reinsert the dipstick but do not screw it in, just let the treads touch the tank.
Remove the dipstick and read the oil level.

should the oil be at the upper lower or middle mark

I prefer to keep near the upper mark.

Keep it toward the upper mark, but make sure you dont overfill it. If you do, you could have mess on your hands, since the excess oil will blow out the breather. Overfilling also puts alot of strain on the seals in the bottom end...
