 I'm posting this info. to see if anyone else has had this problem. My freinds 450R is only 10 months old. We were riding this weekend when the motor locked up! It had plenty of oil, & jetting was fine. We tore it down & found a broken crank, seized rod, & the 2 center eng cases are cracked near the crank bearings. PLEASE HELP ANYONE!
 Thnaks Phil

What oil does he use, and how often does he change it?

My engine let go last month. Suspect 13:1 piston broke taking the rod, cylinder, crankshaft, and BOTH cases with it. Yur problem sounds like it was crank bearings or crank-to-rod bearing seized up. I'm in the same boat though. Lots of money to fix it. Hope you have a service manual if you're gonna fix it yourself. Good luck.

my blew just 2 months ago and we bought it in April of 04
the trust washers on each side of the rod peeled out and sent aluminum through the engine. Honda has had several 450rs do the same thing but they won't do anything about it.
Now mine has a wiseco ultalight 12:1 piston, 220 main jet, k&n, and stage 2 hotcam is on its way.

220 main is completely un-necessary, and I would be surprised if you could get it to rev out being so rich.

I have locked up 2 lower rod bearings in 2 different bikes. I've also blown tranny's and numerous other problems. The Cracked cases are probably from the crank locking at high speed and the sudden stop had to put some force somwhere and that is where it did it. My first crank did that but it didn't crack the cases is just egged them out to the point where the bearings wouldn't hold tight and new cases were needed. I asked mark baldwin why this was happening and he suggested that I use bel ray thumper oil and so far so good.

220 main is not unnecesary. One of my buddies has a wiseco ultralight 12:1 piston, hotcam, k&n,and a biggun evox. He's running a 280 main, keihin's biggest jet, or somewhere around there and he put his on the dyno and his is way lean. my is a little lean the way it is with the 220 main. It pulls way through the top end. it hits the rev limiter at 3/4 trottle.

i just had my top end rebuilt and a week later the thrust washers on my crank went out causing the crank to lock up. i was lucky though and did not wreck the cases!!

hmmm we live in minnesota so its about same elevation. he's running 14:1 comp full port polish head, he's got it all. and at a 190 its jetted spot on!

when you port and polish a 450r you have to run a smaller carb and jetting or it will choke it out with to much gas around here.
Sparks and LRD told me not to port and polish. they said it just ruins the head. Don't know havn't done it.

I own a bike shop and have alot of connects with honda. The honda rep told me that if the atv was used more it would have broke under warrenty.

The atv was used for 2 hours and the guy fell off and broke his hip. It sat in my shop for almost 2 years for sale . I made a deal for it and rode it about 4 hours.

I was pissed!! but what can ya do. Its a hell of alot faster now!
