2005 GNC MX Round 2- Lake Whitney Additional Photo Coverage

You've already seen some excellent coverage of Round 2. GNC_ Reporter did an awesome job with the Pros, and Harlen's live news kept you updated throughout the weekend. Now we'll show you a few of the other classes, plus additional photos from the pits and around the track.

During each of the first three days a line formed at registration as riders signed up for what was to become the 3rd largest GNC MX race ever

As you've heard, the weather was cold and dreary. The low 50s may not sound cold, but a wet cold in Texas can get down in your bones.

Yet, people were still having a great time!

Riders lined up Friday afternoon for tech inspection.

[pitmomts]

"Hurry up and wait" seemed to be the ongoing theme for this weekend.

[pitmomts]

The quads were inspected and marked, ready for racing on Saturday.

[pitmomts]

Most riders smiled as they passed through, relieved.

[pitmomts]

J and J's main photographer, Judy, stayed busy. If you were at Whitney, you probably saw her _ even talked to her. She said she met LOTS of really nice people.

Latecomers passed through tech inspection Saturday morning, while others waited.

[pitmomts]

A mandatory riders' meeting is held.

Finally it's time to rock-n-roll.

J and J Racing's Justin Lawson (18X) is looking good as he completes his first lap in practice on Saturday.

Until he takes a double roll with his bike, putting him out of his first GNC race before it even began.

He knew he should have rolled that first lap! Justin finished the weekend serving as a mechanic in the start, helping everyone out and cheering them on.

You'll get 'em next time, Justin!

Moto 1 began with Cody Land (25) taking the holeshot. Cody later lost his air filter, then bent his swingarm, which caused his chain to come off and put him behind in the race.

Dallas Tapscott (48) picks up speed.

[pitmomts]

Dallas holds the GNC top spot in 90cc Production Jr. He finished first at Glen Helen, then took forth overall at Whitney.

Tyler Webster (104) is in the throttle!

Halley Sellers finished fourth in the PeeWee class for the South Texas Quad Racing Association points series last season. She had a blast at Whitney!

The young riders lined up for Moto 2 on Sunday. Then they waited...

Finally, they're off! Colby Brake (862) looks determined.

Cody Gibson (66) finished second in the race on Saturday, then took first overall for this Round 2 event, putting him in the GNC Top Three position.

After getting hung in the gate, Tyler W. had to make his way from the back of the pack. He did a great job of it, too, finishing with a 5th place overall. Not bad!

Sara Trevino (61) does her best on this little stocker to keep up with the big guys.

Austin Stevens (13) must have tossed his goggles. Many riders were forced to throughout the weekend after they were coated with mud.

Andryanna Salinas, Sara Trevino, and Tyler Webster are hanging out at the track. These kids sure had fun!

Although just young teens, the Youth Production is a very competitive class.

Anthony Jackson (39) and Ryan Anderson (414) get in some practice on Friday. The track is muddy, but nothing like it will become on Saturday!

Josh Juneau (56) takes a jump with Women's A #2 rider Angela Moore. The Womens classes practiced on Friday with the Youth Production class.

Ryan Jones (82) held STQRA's top spot in the Youth Sport Quads last season, but his transmission kept him from completing this national race.

On Saturday, Josh J. and Corey Trevino (71) try to talk over the roar of motors as they wait for their moto to begin.

With 27 riders signing up, the Youth Production was split into two divisions, or gate starts.

Division 1 takes off! One bike stands straight up, and a few others wheelie. These kids are ready to go!

They slide through the mud...

The splashing water sends steam rising as riders try to make their way through the holeshot.

[pitmomts]

You can just imagine what was going through the minds of those on the gate in Division 2 as they watched the mud fly. Regardless, when the gate dropped, they didn't hold back!

In a wide spread, they tear through the mud.

[pitmomts]

Then they pile together in the first turn, most of them unrecognizable.

How did Josh J. remain so clean as he slid towards the front of the pack? Josh ended up with 4th in this moto, after several revisions in scoring.

The mud gets thick, and riders do their best to make it around the track.

Eddie Edmondson (191) tries to keep going. Eddie finished first at Glen Helen, then took second at Whitney, putting him in the GNC first place position. Way to go, Eddie!

Cody Bales succeeds in making it around the track _ an accomplishment in itself, considering the conditions! Cody finished this GNC Round 2 with 10th overall.

I think this is Matt Bremer (111) nosing into it.

Fortunately, the rain ended, and Sunday's race got off to a much better start. Garrett Helmic (3) and Eddie E. battle for first place. Garrett took 2nd place in both motos, giving him a first place win at Whitney. Eddie finished 6th on Saturday, then won 1st in this moto.

The race begins with a pretty tight pack.

Corey T. (71) ran Sunday's moto on a flat tire, and still walked away with 12th overall.

[pitmomts]

Yasmin Adams (43) finished the first moto in 7th and the second one in 6th, giving him the 7th overall position at Whitney.

Dirk Davis (49) took 2nd in his Division on Saturday, but was unable to complete the race Sunday.

Corey Walmer (37) placed third in this second moto, putting him in 6th overall for Round 2.

Colten Moore (21) and Jay Corey (55) are on the throttle.

So does Matt Giles (125). With the track drying out, these kids can finally get in some jumping...

Thanks to all of you for the wonderful words. It really means a lot to all of us, as does our quad racing family. That's one thing that really stands out about the quad racers, and I saw it with most at the nationals as well _ a family of families. No other sport like it!!!

Now, on to more coverage...

The Women’s A (which really should be called Women’s Pro, considering how they ride) is an exciting class to watch. Heather Byrd (#1 this year) and Angela Moore (#2) battle it out, with both wanting that first place position. Heather took the championship from Angela in 2004. Then Angela won at Glen Helen in Round 1. At Lake Whitney, Heather dominated.

Heather gets in some practice on Friday.

The rain sets in as the gate drops on Saturday.

Heather, Angela, and Shannon Friesen (43) jump out front.

Michelle Reiser (113) makes the turn in fourth. Michelle took 3rd in the women's 2004 championship series.

Shannon’s goggles are gone. The track is slick, and the women are soon covered with mud.

Michelle is trying to catch Shannon for that third spot. She doesn’t make it this time.

And Michelle gets fourth _ this time.

Heather looks like a pro on the track. This multi-championship winner started riding more than twenty years ago, and her experience, as well as her training through the “Joe Byrd Quad Riding School,” sure shows.

Angela is also a multi-champ in the Women’s, plus she took 4th overall in the 16-24 class for last year’s GNC series and currently holds the top points position in Open A.

Angela takes a jump. Not an easy task in this mud!

Looking much better on Sunday, Moto 2 begins with Heather out front.

Michelle is behind her, with Angela trying to make a pass.

Heather is gone!

Michelle would love to keep that 2nd position.

But Angela takes it.

Michelle ends up with third overall.

Angela goes for first place, but stays a few seconds behind.

isnt this guy illegal to race? he has a modified shock mount in the front, i thought that was illegal in Youth Production??

yes you can have a modified shock mount as long as it is bolted on and not welded. The same with subframes.

The bikes had been polished for nationals, and looked pretty good in practice on Friday.

Jami Luburgh (25) found a little mud on Friday. But nothing like they would see on Saturday!

The Women’s B/C took off through the mud in Moto 1, with Crystal pulling away.

She came from the outside to make the turn…

And took the holeshot. Unfortunately, she was soon out of the race.

The mostly unidentifiable riders were quickly layered with mud.

Jami finished first in this nasty moto, with Christa Watson (186) coming in second, Shade Warren (610) in third and Leslie Ragon (11) in fourth. Any one of them might be pictured here, but I sure can’t tell.

I do know this is Kara, but she doesn’t usually look like this.

As with the other classes, the Women’s B/C 2nd moto began much better.

Cindi Hart (88) led the first lap, with Jami in second and Misti in third.

Just before the end of the first lap, Misti makes a pass for second.

Leslie Ragon is in fourth, then third, but finishes with first overall for Round 2, putting her in first place in the GNC points for the Women’s B/C.

Kara is in 5th and/or 6th before her pipe gets squashed and the bike dies, putting her in the back of the pack.

Misit goes for a pass on Cindi.

I hope we got these right. So many races, so many photos!!! I will check on the 50s and 90 mods, and will be adding more photos, either here or on the J and J site, but it will take a few more days at least, since we have our season opener (STQRA) this weekend, if it's not rained out. We are all so tired of the rain and mud!! :grr:
