its gonna be hard with only a 500-600 dollar budget

you could spend more money and get the yoshi 450 stroker kit. it should really hang with the 450s

good start would be cams 200$,rev box 100, used carb 200$,drz base gasket 10$-gives higher compression

He said he is now willing to spend about a grand. he does a lot of drag racing in sand. THANKS

i say go with a cheap athena 435 kit bigger carb header for the pipe intake and cams and you should be way ahead of the game.

Do what i did. Do your own portwork. Just a clean up job. Stage II Hotcams, FCR40mm carb, hmf exhaust, home made aluminum airbox, 250r K&N. Kibble white Valve Springs. Dyna ignition. This not only will put you with the 450's but also beating them. Once everything is on right and carb is tuned it will really rip. Have fun.

When you say hang with the YFZ it all depends on the riding you guys are doing. If you guys are going to go in a straight line than do power mods for that extra hmmph. But if you are doing trail rides where suspension is an issue than have him get from new shocks like works steelers in the front and a tcs rebuild in the back. I'd say elka, pep, axis or tcs all around but you did say there was a budget. Good suspension plays a major roll on how fast one can ride. You can have all the speed in the world, but if its not controllable than what good is it?

get the edlbrock carb first and a aluminum air box that will hold a bigger air filter, then put an ex k&n in there. You will be surprised at the amount of power you get.

Like he said.

I have stage 2 hotcams, DRZe base gasket and valvesprings, CT pipe, K&N w/o lid.

My friends YFZ has a white bros E2 slip on, re jetted with airbox lid on(for now/winter).

We raced down the gravel road and were within a quad length the whole race. His had a little more pull at low speed, mine had more top end. (both stock gearing)

I just installed a 39mm FCR, it made a nice gain. I still have some jetting issues. Im also going to order a DYNA, it is badly needed. My quad instantly hits the rev limiter.

check Woodward specialties for cams. I got both of mine for $225 shiped on sale.

Cams, high compression piston 13.5:1, and porting.

Can you run 93 octane gas with 13.5:1 compression?

i agree with zero74,
if you have all the power in the world what good is it if you can't get it to the ground.

Not that I know of. The extra 3 dollars spent per gallon isn't that bad. My quad runs soo smooth on race gas. If you have a place to get it around your cheaply like I do deffinatly get the 13.5:1 piston.

When I race my friends YFZ in a straight line till 4th gear he only gets me by a quad or two everytime. All I have is a full LRD exhaust and the carb (don't know what was done and it runs good so I am not messing with it) that has a lot of tuning done when it was supposedly dyno tuned.

I think you can but I dont think it will be very reliable.I am pretty sure if you are going to run a 13:5 compression ratio then you should run race gas.

Not because its aluminum...i hate when people say that but the UM racing air box uses a 250R filter. You'll need to rejet, remove the spark arestor, use the oversized filter and you should hang with a STOCK yfz. But as soon as he does the same thing you'll be right back where you started. I sell them here (http://www.partsforatvs.com/default.asp?p=202&c=134&cn=Z400+%2F+KFX400+%2F+DVX400)
