my 400ex slowed down when I added 22"s today. it used to run 66mph with stock tires now it runs 58-59mph with brand new 22s..

you guys think its because its not running right or do you think it cant pull 22's???

it did foul the plug right before I ran it on GPS i replaced the plug with the only one i had, it was one step Hotter than stock..

should i sprocket it down or what??

oh yeh it basically quits pullin in 4th..

if you have a stock motor, the gearing with the new tires may be too tall to pull, along with the tires maybe being too heavy. gear down a tooth on the front.

I was thinking it might not.. do you think I should drop 2 teeth??

I weigh 250lbs.. 22" tires stock gears all it has done is pipe and K&N I thought 13 tooth might actually give me a lil more top end??

you should probablly gear it down just one tooth in the front if you have stock gearing. when you gear the front sproket down you get more power with less speed , gear it up in the front more speed yet less power.

Why the hell did you go with 22's:huh

400exguy

more ground clearance and I thought it would help topend

I ride the woods mostly i am tired off bottoming out in the ruts

What kinda tires you got?
I got my skids and my 20's xcr's and loveem for trails and as for the bottomin out part i just try to keep momentum

I had stock wore down tires today I got Maxxis Alltraks they seem ok, but man it bogged down my bike with my big ace on it..

YOU GOT ALLTRACKS ON A 400EX?
and 22's no wonder it bogged it down
thems damn things is HUGE

400exguy

they look awesome on it.. you think that was a bad choice??

Your really going to like the all tracs

I believe you did good.. the tires last a long time and a straight line acceleration they do just as good as brand new honda radials, but last LONGER...

I had them on my 300ex because i found a really good deal on them .. 2 tires 50 dollars i figured i couldn't pass it up...

would i put some on my yfz.. probably not, but if i was going to trail ride i would consider it before going back with xcr's which let me down at LAnd bEtween the LakEs.. I had to stick 5 plugs in my tire:eek2:

I think when i get it sprocketed down 5 will be really happy with them..

It wont pull 4th gear wide open now.. you think something else could be wrong??

I believe something else is wrong.

Go drain your gas, change your oil, buy a new spark plug then come back on here and tell all of us if it runs any better. I know a few people with 22 holeshots on their 400ex and dont have any kind of problems... I believe something giving up in the engine.. does it need new rings? does it smoke on start up? have you had the vavles adjusted lately? all of those things could make you lose power.

400exguy
02-26-2005, 09:32 PM
brand new plug.. one step hotter than stock NGK..
engine was redone this past summer.. no smoke at startup.. engine runs great might need jetting though

It might have old gas in it, maybe 4 weeks old or so, like i said right before I GPS tested it it fouled another plug 2nd one this winter and I replaced it with one hotter than stock all I had

When I put razr 22's on my 300 when the motor was stock, I noticed a huge improvement in top end, and I spun just a little less in the lower gears. There must be something else wrong, because I didn't even go down a tooth on my sprockets.

a 14 tooth front sprocket with 22's will be about equivalent to a 15 tooth with 20's.

400exguy
02-27-2005, 12:14 AM
i know that but do you think it would be better to get a 13 tooth?

what about using stock chain andd 14 or 13 tooth??

hondarider2006

stocl gearing should be fine with 22's. I ran them and I could pull all 5 gears. Have you re-jetted your 400??

Zuber187
02-27-2005, 09:05 AM
I added 22" Bear Claws to my jetted, fltered 400 and it did the same thing I could'nt pull 5 gear at all. I then added the 14 tooth and pick me back up but not as fast as if I had the 20"s back on. Those tires just weigh too much. If your going to go with 22" try to find the lightest ones like Razors or Holeshots and yes you can use your stock chain with a 14 tooth. I'm not sure with the 13.

400exguy
02-27-2005, 01:52 PM
ok so you had the same problem??

OK I might try a 13 tooth, and a 14 tooth if a 13 tooth will fit the stock chain I think that would give me more bottom end and also allow the bike to pull 5th gear better

weighing 250 might have a little to do with it not pulling.
if you drop down to a 13 tooth, you should get a bit more response and it'll probably let you get into 5th gear easier. you might find yourself shifting more often too-maybe...

holy chit, 22" all tracs on a 400?:eek:its not a friggin utility. you shoulda went with a sport quad tire, like razr, holeshots, kendas, but goodluck with them big arse tires

i dont have a 400ex but i have 22's on my 250 and it pulls fine i m thinking of going to 23's when i get my pipe and air filter i couldn't imagine a 400 would have any problem pulling 22's if my 250 can do it

i put Sur Trak 22's on (mostly from a good deal, rather than general desire..) for better clearance, then later went to a 14 tooth sprocket to help in the woods..

its worked real well for me, never a want for power (or traction) when i need it..

as far as your top end.. could be jetting problems w/ fouling the plug and all..

400exguy
02-28-2005, 11:56 AM
you think its lean? its really cold natured takes a while for it to start taking gas...

I dont know if it has a jet kit or not..

400exguy, wasnt trying to be a smart *** about it. you still could be right about it having some mechanical problem. dont take it too personal buddy

naw man its cool. dont sweat it,

I am just wondering what could cause the problem I am having then if its not from going to a bigger tire??

I will try the GPS again on a warmer day with the stock heat range plug in there right now its one step hotter than stock I will also try fresh gas and maybe some octane booster just incase I have BAD GAS in the tank now, a

yeah, i put 22 razors all around too. i noticed a BIG improvement over stock tires. But when I get in fourth and fith gear i lose power. i have no acceleration at the top of fourth and fith. i think it could be my gearing.

that aint nuttin i had 25's on my 400ex and it would only pull 5th goin downhill with a 14t sprocket up front but it had serious top end when it did pull it, i could run side by side with a predator 500 and he was clocked at 83.

Why in the world would you run 25's???

Just an update guys.. looks like my bike wasnt runniing quite right.. that day..

It already has a 14tooth sprocket and it runs 65 with the alltraks and 66 with the stock wore out tires same 14 tooth sprocket

it pulls it just fine when it runs OK all I did was add some carb / injector cleaner to the GAS..

I'm running a bone stock 02' 400ex with 22 XCR's. I've noticed some drag at high speed and I thought it might be due to tall grass or something but a buddy on a stock 99 400ex with 20" XCR's seemed to have just a little more pull and top end, he even has the 14t front sprocket!!(14t is supposed to make it slower on top end but quicker out of the hole) My tires are almost due for replacement so I'm thinking about going back to 20's, and installing the 14t front sprocket when my chain needs wears out. I thought that by having the 22's I would gain some top end but I guess they are just to heavy and have more rolling resistance which makes the engine work harder. I think about these issues when I purchase slicks for my 69 camaro. Hope this helps.:p
