my 300ex has been having starting problems lately. When i start it, it makes a loud rattleing sound as if pieces of metal were flying around in my starter cover or starter. So, i took the starter cover off and checked all the splines on the starter, starter gear, and flywheel to make sure no teeth were missing and everything seemed ok. I also engaged the starter while the gear cover was off and the starter spins freely with no noise.. I put everything back together and it makes a loud banging metal noise again. Any suggestions??

check yer battery my cousins ex hasnt been running in a couple months his did the same so i went over charged the battery took the air filter off told him to hold it hand over the intake , i hit the start button givin it a little gas boom started right up, pu the filter back on ran it for awhile, went and got new gas and it was good to go, if that dont work u might need to check yer engine internals try to located where the knocking rattling sound is, there is a small rounded forgot teh name , near the battery with wiring from the battery that also makes a grinding type sound if the battery is low or your still pushin teh starter button when the quad is running hope this helps let me know if that was the problem

nah i have a new battery. The engine cranks over fine. I checked it out again and the sound is coming from the starter area. Maybe the brushes or the starter's internals are shot. I dont think its engine internals because i can pop start it and the quad runs fine.

ok check your start relay,it is like a lil round cylinder type thingy right by the fusebox and the airbox, press that and start it if that things makes a buzzing sound you have a dead battery...trust me,people post so much about this and don't do a search, and also do you know with some batteries you have to charge them once you get them>?

my starter relay is fine and my battery is fully charged. its not making a buzzing sound, its making a loud metallic sound. I rode it today, some times it starts right away, some times it makes a loud racket then starts.

Has the case been apart? if you don't put the gasket back on the start gear cover, it will create this sound.

Also, you said you checked the flywheel and the starter gears, did you check the intermediate gears? There are at least two. Check them all.

update: still not starting normally.

aviator4- the starter case has never been apart until now.

replaced the starter with a used unit, just to check to see if it was, but of course, it wasnt. this is beginning to get aggrevating. all of the grears look fine. all the teeth are there and they spin. Im thinking it might be the fywheel, but i do not want to take it apart until im sure, unless to check it i have to. I took pics of the intermediate gears, the teeth look fine to me but theres a groove in the bigger one. is this normal??? heres a couple pics.
