I am in the process of getting either a 416 or a 426, i want the 426 but dont have the money for a new sleeve, my engine builder told me that you dont have to resleeve, but i want to get your guys opinion, who of you with 426's?

If you go 426 you better resleve.

Why do you resleeve, because; heat, reliability, or what?
I want to avoid resleeving so should i go with a 416? thanks for advice guys!

I guess I missed something but why resleeve it when you can just bore it out???

There is no reason to resleave for a 426 :o

i heard you bore into the stock sleeve and it leaves it paper thin and it gets too hot and can seize, (426)? a guy at sparks told me this, he said they dont sell 426 kits?

you can buy a thicker sleeve but the majority of 426's out there are bored on the stock sleeve a 426 is only a few thou over the stock service limit

So is the 426 the last bore on a stock sleeve, or is it like you said over the stock sleeve limit, what do i have to worry about if i go this big on a stock sleeve if anything at all?

This is the last bore you can do on the stock sleeve, it is just a little over the stock limit but not enough to hurt anything, your really don't have anything to worry bout if you do your typical maintanence but things do happen and you can't rule everything out, no different than any other motor

So Uglymotha, you think i will be fine then, and do you know how much more hp or power diff. there is between a 416 and a 426 to be worth going to the last bore! My brothers 350x big bore conversion is 2 bike lengths ahead of me on the hill and i want to catch up or beat him? My engine builder says i will be fine and he does good work, but i needed another opinion! Thanks for the help...

a engine is as realiable as you make it in my oppinion, if you engine guy does good work, than i wouldn't have any worries, I build my own engines and i've never once worried about them holding together

as far as power difference between the two its minimal, i've never been outdone by a 426 when my engine was a 416

I would go to 416. 9 or 10 cc's isn't going to be anything noticable. You will notice huge gains with the 416 and upped compression and cam.

Hey Exduner we JUST did our 426ex last week, our regular machinist was scared to bore it to the 426 so we took it to another guy we know & he did & it was/is fine :) we were a little sketchy @ first when the 1st guy didn't feel good doing it but I talked to a couple others & we went for it LOL we just got back from the dunes riding HARD & it's still in one piece :) it is leaking oil :o  but that is something else, lack of torque I do believe!!
We have a 440 big bore w/ new sleeve but wanted to wait to get valve job ect so we went w/ the 426 heard it's supposed to be a good one.
anyway I'd do it if I were you

Bore it. The only reason to re-sleeve to the larger sleeve would be because you think you eventually want to go even larger.

Well, if you go to a 426 now, I guarantee you'll have to resleeve next time. I think you'd be just as happy with a 416, and you'd save yourself enough room for one more rebuild.

Just go with the 416. The gains from the 416 to the 426 will be minimal. IMO its not worth the loss in reliability. Like uglymotha said though an engine is as reliable as you build it. But both engines built equal the 416 will be more reliable because the cylinder is thinner, though minimal. JMO
