I am put on a kick start as a back up. I am wondering how it kicks over without the cam mod and the hot start button?

you NEED the cam mod, but don't need the hotstart;)

It makes it easier to start. Someone with better knowledge can elaborate here, lol.

Without the cam mad you're basically not getting the effect of the auto decompression. When you use the kicker it doesn't turn the motor over as fast as the starter, or maybe it's the other way around, but basically it's not releasing the compression enough to kick the bike. It CAN be done, but it's a PITA. I can kick my bike sitting down, it has the cam mod done.

The kicker turns the engine at a higher RPM than the E-start.

A little over 200 for the basic kicker kit. The prices are listed on yamaha's GYT-R accessory web page.
