Any decent motorcycle oil should be fine. I would run a thicker oil. The 400 gets pretty hot.
I was using the mobil V-twin 20-50 synthetic 5 bucks a quart. But now im trying the Valvaline 20-50 motorcycle oil, 2 bucks a quart. I change my oil about every 4 rides.
20-50 maybe to thick for stock?, but my 440 gets extremely hot.

every four rides? **** man i know we all like to take care of our 6,000 dollar toys but isnt that a little excessive? im a little new but i cant imagine that that oil looks any different when you take it out than when you put it in! do ride hard as a sum***** or what? i would think that at every 4 rides youre riding 7 to 8 hours a wack?

Do any of you guys using the mobil 1 have problems with the clutch slipping or is that just hype.

Also does the oil stay cleaner longer?

No problems with slipping clutches here. My valvetrain is quiet now too! Mobil 1 15w50 Automotive oil! Check some threads. There was a LARGE discussion on it a couple of months back.

The key with Mobile 1 is that you want to run the Mobile 1 motorcyle oil.

The deal with the clutch is that the 400EX as well as most other 4 stroke motorcycle engines use the same oil to lube the engine and the tranny.

Mobile 1 automotive oil contains molybdenum disulfide (moly) to penetrate metal surfaces. The concern with that is that when you run this oil in a motorcycle engine with a wet clutch, the moly penetrates the friction plates and causes the clutch to slip.

I had a '99 CBR600F4 and a '99 CBR900RR and I read in a Honda tech sheet that is sent to all of their shops' mechanics that speciffically said not to run an oil that contains moly.

Mobile 1 has recently (in the last couple of years) developed their synthetic motorcycle oil that does not contain moly and is safe for wet clutches.

Hope this helps a bit.

Heh, :square . I do ride pretty hard. My bike gets incredibly hot. The oil always comes out black. Maybe Its more acurate for me to say that I change the oil every 3-4 Weekend rides. If I ride, its ussually on a weekend trip. 1 or 2 weekends burning the heck outta her at Silverlake and shes in desprate need of an oil change :)

I run Mobile 1 15w-50 and love it. No clutch slip at all.. I change my oil after every weekend ride at the dunes... full change including filter.. The oil always looks good but I am just anal and like the bike to have the best posible conditions to work in. I really don't think you can ever change your oil to much.....I am a firm believer that if you take care of the machine it will last you longer.

So everyone runs Mobil 1 motor synthetic motorcycle oil or regular syntheic oil? I have always ran regular non syntheic (GN) honda oil will it be ok to switch to syntheic?

Is there a better oil filter than stock? How good are the K&N oil filters

That right, just AUTOMOTIVE Mobil 1. I probably let the Mobil 1 stay in one more ride as compared to regular oil, some folks may go longer with the synethetic. (Me about 4 moderate rides.) I figure, its just 2 quarts, it does get hot and I want my motor to last a long time.

Just out of curiousity, is that 15W-50 mobil one good for the winter? It seems as if it would be a little too heavy to run in the winter, or is it alright? I am wondering because my 400ex has only about 10-15 hours on it, and I am doing my first oil change next weekend, and I am wondering if I should go full synthetic? Is it just better for all around riding?
