I just ran my quad at night and I pulled it into my garage with the lights off. I hopped down and took off my helmet and the headpipes caught my eye because they were semi-glowing red for like the first 3 1/2 inches out of the cylinder. I have white brothers full exhaust, K&N filter and lid, and rejetted to 170. It has a nice brown color on the poreclin of the spark plug. I was wondering if I was running lean or does that happen on all the 400ex's?

That's normal. My friends 400EX does that too, with a yoshimura pipe, and my other friends YFZ properly jetted.

A quote from "THE WRENCH" Honda's technical bulletin sent out to dealer mechanics.

^^^HOT HEADER PIPES^^^
If your TRX customers express concern that the header pipe (where it exits the cylinder) has a reddish glow especially during night riding, don't be alarmed.
The header pipes on are made of steel alloy for durability and are of single wall design to save weight.
Please advise that this reddish glow is NORMAL.

I have talked to severla dealers on this issue, because I have a stock 04 400ex and mine does the same thing. They said most people dont noitce it when they are riding, and when its sitting and your reving it a bit the pipes will get red because there is no air flowing over them to cool them. I checked with 2 different dealers just to see if they were both on the same page and they were.

when we were out riding last night my dads 400 pipe did that for the first time but we settled on that i was because we were just whippin donuts for like a half hour so the air wasnt hitting it and cooling it like it should and as soon as we left it went away and didnt come back.

normal. If you were running lean your spark plug would be a bone white color, brown shows that your engine is running perfect. my friend also has a 400 and his pipes will glow if it sits, mine too.
