Since the 416 is a smaller bore, it will be less likely to break down, however, I don't think it would be accurate to say that the 440 isn't reliable. Since it is a larger bore, there is simply an slightly higher risk of having problems. A 416 kit is cheaper. I have never seen or raced a 440 (to my knowledge), but I have read numerous posts here about how the 440 is not much faster (or sometimes even slower) than a 416. IF this is the case, the main reason for it being like that (as far as I can tell) would be the cam & carb in the 440. A built 440 would have to have a larger carb (like a 39 or 41mm FCR) & a VERY agressive cam. The cam would require hard-faced rockers, so you are talking about a significant amount of money. This is all theory, so if I am way off base, somebody let me know.

If you have the money, do the 440 w/ the carb, hard-faced rockers & cam. The cost would probably be $400-600 more than the 416. I think the 416 is probably the better way to go for you. Get the 416 w/ a drop-in cam, you won't be dissapointed.

I love this question allmost as much as my answer.

I recomend that every one thinking of a bigger bore go with the 416 as it makes much more power than the 440 :D

If your are racing mx then get the 416 or a 425 which ever. The 416 with a JE piston is much lighter than the 440's and will also keep the engine cooler which makes for more power. My 416 has a JE piston, TC mx cam, 38mm lectron carb, TC pipe, heavy duty valves, K&N filter with out air box lid, lightend flywheel, TC ported head, and the Hinson clutch. I have race many 440 and have beaten them. Especally off the line, I can beat a 440 off the line no problem.

This is my 2 cents. I race harescambles so I was looking for a little different power than you but I did go witha 416 with an 11:1 from LRD at first. I loved it and it was quick. At the time I also beat 440s from a dead engine atart and I did not go with any aftermarket cam. I now have a 440 11:1 and still have not changed my cam yet and I am very pleased. It has tons of low end! I weigh all of 220lbs and I can climb a hill in the woos in third. Of course I'll slip the clutch a little but not very often. My next step is a TC woods cam but even now I don't need it (powerwise). Someone correct me if I am wrong but it all comes down to what you want. The 416 or 425 is VERY nice but I was looking for more bottom end for woods and I found it with the 440.

I would with out a doubt go with a 416.I would go with a Sparks 416 with a x6 pipe and drop in cam,39 fcr and a hinson basket>This would be very fast, reliable and would run cool!
