My buddy has a 416ex that he bought from a guy that raced it. Its got a high compression piston and runs on 110 or 116 octane, i cant remmber which one. He wants to use it for trail riding, so can he put a 416 piston with stock compresion and run regular? Or will he have to go back to the 400 piston?

he can't go back to a 400 because it's been bored out.
run the race fuel, the motor will run cooler.

What compression is it? If it is 11.1 or under, then he only has to run 93 or 94 octane.
