Ok so i'm in the process of re-doing my 250R. For what i know it's an 86 Frame with an 88 motor. But how do i tell for sure?? What is diffrent about the 88 motor from the 86? Whats diffrent on the frame of the 86 compared to an 88? I just need to know this information so i buy the right parts.

Ex: I found a nice 6+ swingarm and the guy says it only fits an 88-89, so whats so diffrent??

Any help would really be appreciated

For stock swingarms:
on the 86-87 swingarms the rear motor mount is incorporated in the swingarm. there is a space in between the mounts (where the swingarm bolt goes through for the motor mount)
On the 88-89 where the swingarm bolt goes through is solid all the way across.
The 88-89 length swingarm is (I believe) 1" shorter than the 86-87
And the 86-87 is steel where as the 88-89 is aluminum

Hope this helps

Sorry I forgot -
You CAN use an 88-89 swingarm on the 86-87 frames

86 is a short rod motor
86 87 hav taller 5th an 6th gears in the tranny and run a 1 tooth different reaer sprocket
86 87 hav slightly different front motor mounts but the brackets for all four yrs are the same.
the cdi on the 88 89 is slightly higher rev and a lil better built piece.
86 airbox boot doesnt hav the resinator
porting is diferent across all yrs
88 most stock hourse power
89 groove in head to lower compression an make it easier to start
rear shock on the 86 is the longest 87 is a lil shorter 88 89 hav the shortest shock
dog bones are different in thouse yrs an need to b run with the correct shock. (u can put a 88 89 dogbone on a 86 shock an get a lower ride hite)
86 frame is the heaviest and strongest 87 a lil lighter a lil weeker 88 89 lightest and weekest stock frame.
dimensions 86 87 has longer 2 inch longer swinger
88 89 shorter swinger but a arms are 1 inch forward so only one inch different in total wheelbase.
and the front tires on the 88 89 r 22 whereas they r 21 on the 86 87
86 style piston can b used on 87 an up rods with a 4.5 mill space plate (the rest is gasket to get to 5 mil) and then u can bore the jug to 140 over safely. u can bore any yr jug out to that the reason they say u cant do it on the later yrs is becuz they dont make that big of a piston for the later yr engines. i dont know y.

all i can think of off the top of my head

sumbody should sticky this so i dont hafta type it every month

Hey guys thanks a lot for the help. So now i'm almost positive i have an 86 frame and swing arm. Could you take a look at the pics and confirm this for me??

looks to be 86!;) 86 has an extra frame gusset than the rest, has round holes in the rear linkage mount(87 has oblobbed) 86 also has the forked front bumpermount

The frame mounts for the control arms are in the same location all years, I already did the measurements on this, the one inch forward must be in the bend of the control arms.
One way to determine an 88 from an 89 that nobody ever seems to hit on is the mounting holes on the subframe for the footguards that come on an 89 model.

The 87-89 dogbone link is the shorter of the two and if you use this with an 86 shock it actually increases ride height. You have a longer shock and a shorter link, the swingarm has to move downward for the two to meet. Or think of it this way, to get the link to meet the shock, the distance between the top of the frame to the centerline of the axle carrier increases, resulting in a higher ride height.

The 88-89 are almost the same 87 is diff from a 86......and a 86 are junk.....I've owned a 86,87,(3)88 & 89 250R the frame's are stronger on 86's IMO but the swinger's are better 88-89 do to the length

he thinks its junk because the 86 came with a longer swingarm....

Hmm and why is a longer swingarm bad???I would perfer a longer swingarm........

i think the 86 chassis set up is perfect. the 88-89 swinger is weaker and i prefer a longer swinger, but i do a lot of hill climbing. ive got a +2 on my 450R and its awsome :D

Do a search for MacDizzy's two stroke technology exchange. I have the site saved in my favorites, but don't know how to transfer it to this post. The amount of 250R information on this site in incredible. There are alot more differences than you think. The MacDizzy site has part numbers, too. Check it out.
