I just installed the JE 416 kit and XR 400 cam from Marcum's. --- BTW, Terry is great to work with and very helpful.

My question is:

On the head cover, there are 13 bolts. The largest is right in the center of the head and the other 12 of various lengths are spaced around the edges. The service manual calls for 17 lbs of torque on the center, but does not specify on the others. I tried to go to 10 lbs on the outer bolts, but some of them began to feel like they were going to strip, so I stopped at between 6 and 8 lbs.

Has anyone seen any specs on these bolts? If not, what is everyone else using on these bolts and with what results?

Thanks

Yeah, I tightened mine down snug,,, I didnt even torque them.

They havent leaked oil yet so i'm fine. But the center bolt is supposed to be at 17ft-lbs.

I know alot of people that have either stripped, stretched or snapped head cover bolts due to the wrong specs in the manuel.

They should get there crap straight to prevent all this confusion!!

Definately just tighten them down snug. This I am very positive about. :) How do I know? lol Because I have 12 1/2 bolts holding my head cap on. Never leaks, and been ridden hard on for over 1 yr.
