I'm just curious how doctors make money in Canada...are they considered government workers or can they have their own private practice and the government just acts as the insurance company?

the idea sounds good and apparently it works well in Canada, but govt. provided healthcare for 200 million people would be minimal, expensive as hell, and mismanaged- basically just like welfare and social security. Plus you would have a ton of unemployed insurance workers.

Ugh i hate it when the only solutions for a huge problem just causes even more problems....:(

i may be wrong but the bad thing about canadian health plan is that the list for major surgeries is so big it takes forever to get it done even if you need it right away

You're right ... the list can sometimes take up to about 6 months ... but it depends on the surgery . If it's a critical surgery , they'll do it within days or a few weeks .... but if it's something that a person can live with , it takes longer .

And to whoever asked , yes the Doctors get paid through the government . Here in Ontario , all residents are covered by OHIP ( Ontario Health Insurance Plan) ... part of our tax dollars go towards this . Some people complain about it , but I sure as hell don't . I'd litterally be bankrupt if I had to pay for all my visits to the hospital . The government is trying to privatize our health care system , but if that were to happen , I guarantee there would be an uproar with the citizens . You ask any Canadian , and we are proud of our health care system .... we fought to have it , and I'll be damned if they take it away without us putting up a fight .

And whoever said having a health care system for 200 million people would cause problems , is probably right . We're a small nation of 36 million so it's easier to manage .

Broken foot + Broken shoulder + Broken back (and 11 months in a full body brace plus rehab) = $75,000.00 +

Insurance covered just about all of it, get....dont just get, demand good insurance it pays off.

Yeah private insurance is great, but the thing is it is really expensive. If you get insurance, you may have to pay $500 of that 23,000 dollar surgery. I'm all for healthcare staying private, but the costs are getting ridiculous. I dont want government healthcare either because my taxes are high enough already and government provided anything sucks. I'm glad my dad has a good job and we can afford insurance.

I'm going to come up with a solution to the healthcare problem and make billions.

So greg you said the Doctors in Canada are paid by the government- is this why they all come to the US? I may not have fully understood, but why would a doctor stay in canada to get government paid when he could make millions in the US?

My girlfriend was born in canada- and her dad is a Neurosurgeon. They moved here when she was 2 (maybe that was when they started the government healthcare plan) and lets just say he makes quite a bit of money. Why would he want to practice in canada? That would be the only thing that worried me in Canada- a lack of top-notch doctors...

Yeah ... most go to the USA because of a better pay . Although they do get paid very well from the doctors that I know . My family doctor makes about 600 - 700 000 a year . Specialists make well over the 700 000 mark . It all depends on how many patients they have and which locations they are in . Doctors that practice up in the Northern areas like I am , get extra pay from the government , because the number of patients they have aren't as much as if they were to be in a more populated area .

As far as top notch doctors , that ain't much of a concern . We have doctors with as much experience and knowledge as those in the USA . Some doctors move away for personal reasons .... some like the warmer temps of the southern USA ... some have other reasons .... but theres deffinately a pay difference .

I have a great healthplan! When I broke my ankle, it was about $16 for the ER visit, surgery, casts, $80 for the special boot I had, and $10 a shot on perscriptions (I went through 4) so about $136 total.

When my son was born our out of poket exspense was $15.00. 3
Dr visit's @ $5.00 each for co-pay.

That boy was 9 lbs and 21" long. He came into this world sideway's @ 100+ MPH. (funny, that's how he does everything come to think of it.)

The birth was pretty tough on my wife, they took her to do a body scan because they could not locate an embolism to stop her bleeding. Dude walks out and say's "would you like me to get you a priest?"

I about **** myself.... turn's out she was ok but damn....

anyway, exspensive stay and only had the $15.00 ... pretty sweet..

I've been told that health insurance won't cover an ATV crash because it's a motor vehicle and that has to be covered by vehicle coverage. BS? My wife ran her nose into the open door of the car in our garage and it had to be paid by my car insurance even though there wasn't even anybody in the car.

i got lucky with my wrist. i was in the hospital for 3 days, had surgery and physical therapy and the total was like 18 g's. but my families insurance wouldn't cover it. luckily KY has some kind of assistance, i think it was called KCHIP, and it covered everything.

My insurance covered my wreck. I'd be totally screwed if it didn't.

When I broke my wrist it was somewhere around 10 grand, and my fingers were like 1,000 bucks. What really cost me in my wrist were those damn screws and plate. Luckliy insurance covered most of it.
