Making the trek from Connecticut, Josh Creamer #270 leads but for a moment over Matt White and what appears to be a heavily covered Kory Ellis. (I could be wrong though, it’s really hard to tell due to the mud).

One of the new configurations of the track is this portion that only Pro and Pro Am riders would attack. What used to be the long uphill to the top of Mt. St. Helens, riders now about three quarters of the way to the top make a sharp U-turn, making it possible for spectators to view more of the exciting racing action.

GNC_Reporter
02-08-2005, 07:25 AM
Although riders enter the top of Mt. St. Helens from a different angle they still use the steep down hill decent where riders had to be hard on the rear brakes to set up for a sharp left hander at the bottom. Viewable is Farr’s marginal lead over the rest of the pack.

After an excellent first moto where he claimed 11th, Jason Dunkelberger No. 19 would be one of several that fell victim to the second moto and due to bike problems finished a dismal 19th in the moto with an overall 17th for the day.

Just when you thought it was time to go home, the riders in the Pro class were surprised by a formal protest had been lodged by Doug Gust against Tim Farr for engine displacement. Due to the fact that it affects the entire class depending on the outcome, many riders elected to receive their checks in the mail once the results were considered final. Farr’s machine along with Mark Baldwin make their way to the tear down location. Tom Carlson would measure and claim that the machine was found legal with 449cc displacement.

Hard to blame the protest.. Farr's bike smoked everyone off the start and up the hills.. That thing rips..... He had a late start off the line in moto 2 and still smoked everyone once he hit 4the gear.. Those fellows in Japan can really build a motor...

It was definately team Suzuki that filed the protest!

They seemed pretty pissed that Farr pulled both motos uncontested from start to end!

Yeah, thats the word. I guess Honda is developing some new stuff for the Honda. THe motor that Tim ran at Glen Helen was not touched by Sparks. In fact, i think it was all Honda and Baldwin just put it all together. Also, i think its pretty cool that Mark and Wayne do most of the tuning on the PEP shocks, and the riders that are riding Elka have Precision COncepts, and Noleen doing the tuning. Noleen is tuning Byrds Axis shocks too!

not sure if anyone took notice to things that I saw on Farr's bike that was different from last year. He not running any sparks stickers......... his pipe isn't DG........ it's a White Brothers and he has white brothers stickers on his bike now......... I think that his motor was tuned by White Brothers this year......... which is who does the dirtbike motors for Honda. and I did notice the walsh front end on his 450R as well........

Jeff2269
02-08-2005, 04:17 PM
Baldwin is doing all the tuning on the engine. White Brothers is just doing the exhaust. That all has to do with whose going to pay you the most. DG never did make tims exhaust, they just put their stickers on it. Tim was running all Walsh stuff even their savior rear end. Mark said that works better than the linkage that he makes to work with the laeger and stock stuff. He also said that the Walsh front end works just as good as the pro-trax front end. Right now Walsh stuff is expensive and nearly impossible to get, thats why Baldwin isnt selling his stuff, but it looks like he will be running Walsh this year.

Zwanter
02-08-2005, 05:23 PM
gah i cant believe how many people are running walsh......then again its some very nice stuff. oh and why did dunk switch to ohlins?

protraxrptr17
02-08-2005, 05:47 PM
I can't say because I've never ridden Walsh stuff, but it would have to be pretty sweet to beat the t-pin setup. Might have to try some. I have noticed that Pro-Trax front ends are becoming scarce. I don't know why, they work awesome. Alot of the people new to the sport that look at my bike don't even notice the difference and have never even heard of it. Get out a mid 90's Dirtwheels and check out the National coverage. Lot's of Laeger stuff. I don't know what happened. Maybe he doesn't give out sponsorships like he used to.

This is the way it should be. Tim should have been getting the same treatment as the bike guys from the start. It just goes to show how much technology Honda has at it's fingertips. Tim's motor for this season is probably right on par w/ the motor that Carmichael ran in his 450 for the 04' nationals. Farr's 450 seems to be more of a "true factory machine" this year. It's about time...

i heard that smitty was mad because people were adding dirt to the start to get a better start, so they would not spin on the concrete

Walsh is moving to Florida and going BIG. He even talked about building enough quads in a year to be considered a manufacture. Something about KTM 450's and 520's

Great Coverage for sure. Good to see Farr and Baldwin back on top. Walsh is just amazing now. All the best are running them...

So how truthfull is this info i want to know if honda is doing this or not..

Thats the word. Thats the talk around the pits. Sparks and Baldwin are getting more HP out of the Honda than they are the Yamaha now, so maybe Baldwin has just figured out a nice combination. Sparks said that they thought the engine was done at Honda but didnt say for sure. They didnt want to speculate. Baldwin said that they did the work. so who knows. And as far the Mikes ktm 520, im sure it is a monster, but i dont think that is where the direction of the sport is headed.

Get out a mid 90's Dirtwheels and check out the National coverage. Lot's of Laeger stuff. I don't know what happened. Maybe he doesn't give out sponsorships like he used to.

From what I've heard, chassis builders are able to get the same handling out of their stuff as the T-pin offers. I would love to have the protrax front end, but it's way too much money for an amateur rider in my opinion. I don't know, just what I've heard, anyone have anymore info on this?

does anyone know what tim's win % is in the mud, to me it seems like he holeshots and wins alot when it is muddy, he would have won at muddy creek last year if he would have not ran of the track

Tim's motor isn't from Japan, it's from Ohio. Mark Baldwin builds Farr's bikes top to bottom, not Curtis, not factory Honda - Baldwin does everything. Honda just gives Tim bikes and parts.

i saw the sparks on the side of farr's motor both at phoenix and glen helen. so kwad gawd get your facts straight. baldwin is his mechanic and sparks builds the motors for him.

Watch what you say, Curtis has nothing to do with Farr's engines this year.

Josh, you dont know what you are talking about. Sparks had nothing to do with Farrs engine at Glen Helen. Call and ask sparks, or get your facts straight.

Another thing I noticed. Farr was the poster boy for the new Four ATV Gear. He's wearing Alloy in the race. Wonder what happened to that deal?

Great coverage by the way. Natalie always has motor problems! I hope they get him a reliable motor in that Honda soon, he can still be in the hunt.

Just wanted to say we were there, and had a blast. Everybody was so helpful and friendly in the pits. With all the people that showed up, and the mud on sunday, I was impressed how well things ran. Practice was a little confusing, but Reed got to ride the wheels off his bikes.
Reed finished 2-3 for a 3rd overall in the youth production class.
He would have probably won it, if he hadn't missed a shift going up the uphill, and the other kid wouldn't have t-boned him in the corner. He was stuck for 20-30 seconds, and still caught back up and got 3rd.

FOUR is a division of Oneal/Azonic, it is being marketed to the quad guys only. Farr was orginallly going to run the FOUR gear instead of Oneal, but Alloy came along and made him a better offer.

Sweet pics and coverage! Its GREAT to see Tim back to his old self pulling out overalls again... It seems that him and Mark have got a competitive setup on that Honda finally and I wish him alot of success this year, especially since Im from OH and have always pulled for him. Looks like Gust hasnt lost any ground either since last season, and if Jones can avoid mechanical problems, and Natalie rides like he has over the past year, I think this is gonna shape up to be one hell of a good race season this year!!!

I love the fact that "the Champion" and "Zuke" through up the protest! Congrats to Timmer!

I mean really, Timmer has an excellent day and automatically he is protested? How many times were Diggers quads protested last year? Does anyone know?

He was protested twice that I know of. Once at Budds for his engine, and the second time was for his helmet. They thought he had some kind of communications with his pit crew.

i was just wanting to say that i was at the pro quads race in st. louis and I was in the pits and made sure i looked at farrs motor since everyone was debating on who built it. When i looked at it about a foot away it said "baldwin". he doesnt even have any sparks stickers on his bike anymore. just thought i would tell everyone

youd think honda would hook him up with some decent looking graphics and stuff, hes gotta have one of the ugliest quads in the pro class youd think honda would send him a nice looking factory honda/baldwin kit with the logos on the graphics like duncan has instead of plastering stickers all over it..., team honda and suzuki are running walsh now i see what happened to roll design? laegers is under new ownership and stuff, maybe that made baldwin shy away, but the t-pin fixed problems with the 250rs front end but newer technology doesnt have that problem anymore so the only point of having a t pin on a yfz or r is to say you have it

The reason Tim's bike looks like it does is because that is the way Factory Honda wants it. I thought that he might change to the black color when it came out, but that went against the whole Ride Red campaign. Honda is very strict with what is put on the bike. Do you see any correlation with Tim, White Brothers, and the Factory Honda MX dirtbike riders? Honda is very set in their ways. Smae concept with their gear. Every Honda commercial on TV has the riders wearing Fox gear. On the front of the TRX 450r brochure, Tim is pictured wearing Fox gear, evem though he has never been sponsored by them. They want the bike to appear close to what it looks like on the showroom floor. Everything on his bike is grey, just like a stock bike. For the leymen that sees Tim's bike in a magazine, then goes into the showroom, the bikes look identical other than stickers. He automatcally thinks he is getting the same bike Tim has. Pretty smart if you ask me.
