The KTM 520 is an awesome motor, but you don't see many conversions because the chain is on the opposite side.

If they're making a sport quad, I hope they do it right. They need to just sit down with a Honda and copy it. Don't try to come out with something radical and new, but turns out it doesn't work. Go with the tried and true until you get yourself established.

If they're looking for a designer right now, it will probably be at least 5 years before something hits the showroom floor.

Mike Walsh has a KTM520/250r quad that he lovs to race in Open Pro/Am, and he builds frames for a living. I think he would be the best man for the job, but i dont think he can afford to abandon his company right now.

That would be the first mistake is copying a Honda.

especially with the pressure of doing all of team suzuki now. I think he could make frames again though. They lost frame business when aftermarket frames became out of the rules.

How so? I don't mean a direct carbon copy, but something very similar. It worked well for Suzuki modeling the Z400 very close to the 400EX. You don't think a KTM engine in a Honda chassis would be a potent combination?

Hes still madly backordered on frames and sells every one he makes.

The chain is on the left side of the RFS engines. I'm doing a conversion myself (check my sig!). Those engines are awesome. Last much longer than Japanese engines and have lots of different transmission ratios and power characteristics to choose from. They also come with the integrated hydro clutch like Cannondale has. E-start can be easily added or taken off. The '04 525SX like I have, has a removeable weight on the crankshaft that you can take off or put on depending on your riding style or track conditions. I'm still learning about them, so there's still more advantages that I don't even know about. The SX version is supposed to be the hottest. It has the 4 speed trans, aggressive cam and ignition mapping, and no charging system to pull on the crankshaft. Oh yeah, 41mm FCR carb too! The bikes come stock with Brembo brakes, billet triple clamps (which I think have some sort of geometry adjustment, rake or trail or something), and chrome-moly frame which is powdercoated (so are the hubs). The engines are really light too. I'm saving nearly 80lbs with this conversion. I haven't weighed this engine yet, but I can easily pick it up with one hand.

If KTM builds a quad I will buy the first one I see. I KNOW it will be top of the line. They just need to get an American frame builder that has built some ground breaking stuff for our sport. I hope it doesn't turn out like the rest of those freakish Euro quads of the past. Remember that thing that had big round hole drilled in the plastic? Was it an EML or something like that?

KTM competes in the dirtbike nationals right? So do they have a 450?

they have a 450 and a 525, I wouldn't be suprised to see a 2 stroke quad from them(it proabably wouldn't be released in the us anyway).

it's going too be the 525. racer productions bumped the cc limit upto 525 from 500. why do you think they did that

The 520/525 actually is 510cc. I think they called it a 520 in the beginning to distinguish it from the Husaberg 510. They then changed it to 525 in '03 because they updated some stuff. I'm not sure of the differences but there weren't many.
