well im onto stage 2 of my new computer, ive got all the new parts, i installed the motherboard, proccessor etc. I just plugged the front led, usb ports, power button, etc on and now im ready to go to the next stage. I need to put my current hdd into the new one.

So here is what i was told i could do.

A. Format HDD and loose everything, then do a clean install of windows.

B. RePartition HDD and save all the important stuff in a 2nd partition, then format the first Partition and do a clean install of windows on there.

C. Create a ghost of my current HDD and save it on another HDD(i have a 6GB extra hdd and i was told it should fit everything (im only using 10 of my current HHD) since it compresses it.

So what should i do, i want the easiest solution without a big hassle yet i dont wanna loose everything. Im really interested in doing choice C.

ALSO. is there naything else i need to do to this new computer?

Thx alot
Ralph

Just burn everything you need like Mp3's, word documents, pics, porn, etc... to CD. Then reformat the HD in the new system, install windows and drop all of your documents on the freshly installed hard drive. If you want to make a ghost of your current drive and put it on your new system it won't work because you are working with a whole new set of drivers from the new motherboard, video, etc... Maybe i am not understanding you right but this is what I would do.

grrr,,,, formating everything would suck, its not even the mp3's i care about. its EVERYTHING...lol. i guess i will just have to do that, i just hope my cd burner works cause it was giving me some trouble.

So once i format the old HDD do i just connect it and boot up the machine, what should i do, boot it with the win 2000 pro cd in it?
i never done a clean install.

also what do u think about repartitioning my HDD with all the old information on a second section.

i just want to get this done asap with the least amount of downtime since i have some deadlines on a website and things im building

the computer shop here we ghost to a new drive and install clean on orignal. seems to be the best that way no chance of data loss.

EDIT: did not see the last questions in the thread. after clone is done load windows 2000 off disk will tell you that there is allready an operating system installed. choose to clean install (not repair) it will ask what partition to install to and it is there that you choose to format. install windows and all drivers and ready to go

here is what im doing right now, im mooving all my important data to an old 4 gb hdd, then i will do what you saw with my 120 gb hdd and do a clean install in the new computer. Then slave the small on and have all my important files and slowly rebuild my empire:(

im gonna be so screwed if i loose some of my important programs. I am doing a pretty big project right now where time is essential. My photoshop is also gonna be demolished because i have so many custom brushes, actions, paths etc... Wish me luck...

As for the ghosting im not about to by norton ghost. And i dont feel like waiting till thurs for my computer guy to get back(he is also a pilot). Im like a little impatiant kid. I want it NOW:macho :D

:ermm:

now im doubting myself. i read on some other sites i would just beable to plug the old hdd in and boot the new system up and it would ask me to format. then it said i would have to set the boot thing to cd rom or whatever and boot off of the cd.

well all i got when i did that was a no signal to the monitor and an annoying beebing noise. No bios setup or anything? is there a change i fudged something up? Should i try to reformat the new HDD in the old computer and then plug everyhtin back in? im just not so happy about reformating this thing until i know i didnt fry the motherboard or something:eek:

i feel like a woman changing a car tire with this thing:(
