correct me if Im wrong..but my mechanic told me that I can use am xr 400 headgasket on my 400ex ..he said it is thinner than the one on my quad which would result in more compression...is this true? and has anyone done this? thnx

Yep, the thinner gasket will basically lower the head making the combustion chamber smaller. This will in effect give you a higher compression.

I've had one for a couple of months now, without any problems.

This was discussed in detail as well as other possibilities on a thread called have you decked the cylinder. Check it out it's a very good post.

What would be the advantage for using a xr400 head gasket?

Higher compression ratio due t the thinner head gasket.

The specs for many of the pistons are actually the specs for the XR400, when installed in an EX w/ a stock gasket they are roughly .2 lower than advertised (although it seems from reading some of our more knowledgeable engine tweakers posts that many aren't even close either way..)

You are so correct on that one. Funny thing is how many people just dont want to believe what those "tweakers" say.

Would there be any benefit to the gasket on a stock bore and pistoned motor. I know it would up the compression but what benefits would that bring to a stocker bike. Have been contemplating this mod on my bike. Would it undermine the reliablity factor???? Just looking for some firm info so I can convince myself if this is a good or bad setup on my bike.
Thanks
