what does everyone prefer 85-86 with the taller 5th-6th or 87-89
I a set from an 86 and a set from an 89 and just wanted to get some opinions since my cases are split

when my bottom end was rebuilt i used 89 gears and i like them better for racing purposes. if you constantly ride at top speed then i would go for the 86, but the 89 gears are better in every other situation: mx, xc, drag racing, dunes, etc.

I agree, it depends on the type of riding you do combined with do you have enough power to pull the tall gears, where you are riding.

We ride mostly in the dunes which sucks lots of power, to even hit 5th or 6th you have to be on the pipe or it will fall flat going up a long hill. Even that depends on how your engine is built to come into the power band, I have ported mine for all top end which is the exact opposite that a woods or mx racer would want.

I can't hit the tall gears unless my motor is up around 7000 rpm where the woods/mx guys can pull them much lower and even more yet if equiped with a power valve on the exhaust port.

it all depends on the gearing you run. I was pulling 5th and 6th in the dunes in glamis with 13/37 i had to be on the power band hard to get into 6th. if i ran 13/38 or 39 it would pull 5th and 6th with ease. with paddles
