Hey I figured this was the best place for advice about a 400ex. It appears that I will be buying a quad for my wife to replace her 300ex. She needs more power and decided to go with the next step up. We do alittle bit every kind of riding and racing. So my question is without spending a ton of money and getting into engine work and suspension mods....yet. We are going to buy a bone stock 2003 400ex. What are the best mods for the money that you all would do first?? EXAMPLES. K & N filter jetting pipe CDI box anything else??? It sounds like the HMF pipe is popular. Does it make a big difference if you just get the slip-on or the whole system (head pipe)??? I really appreciate all the help and info I can get. Thanks Again

P.S. Yes I do ride a YFZ please don't hold that against me :) I don't have anything against Hondas.

cheap and simple: Slip-on, filter, open air box(depending on where you ride) and proper jetting.

Yep all of that stuff wont make a noticable diffence unless you jet it right.

if i were you, i'd just get the slip-on instead of the full system.......unless in the future you plan on doin some motor work. that should work out good for you

The first thing any bike needs is a pipe, air filter, and proper jetting. There will be a noticeable difference if those 3 things are done properly.

If top end speed isn't an issue you could also go to a 14T front sprocket. It'll drop 2-3mph off of the top end but will give it a bit more quickness off the line and more grunt through all the gears.

Afull pipe really does not help anymore than a slip on unless you are planning on doing some head work in the future.First thing i like to do to my quads is make them ride like a cadi.Suspension is your best friend dont matter how fast your quad is if it dont handle good.Fast motor bad suspension loosing combination...Chris

a full system is really helpful if you plan on more mods in the future. a piston and cam will give you the best gains for the money and isn't hard to install yourself with the service manual. i would not get a rev box, the gains are very minimal.

i put on an hmf slip on, k&n air filter, and a stage 1 cam (and proper jetting). im pretty happy with the results and have to say out of all i love the hmf the best out of all mods.

I would like to see a dyno where a k&n filter was added to a 400ex and it produced more power.
