When I had my 14/38 on mine, my buddies stock geared Z400 would outrun mine in 4th and I was tapped right out in 5th if that helps. And that was about mid throttle 4th for him, so it drastically slows it down, but off of the line I would pull on him until about 4th, then it was bye bye

i have 14/39 and 14/36 gearing. you do loose quite a bit of topend about 5mph, but you will have good acceleration. with my 14/39 and some other mods i had this past summer i was beating banshees, z/kfx 400's, other 400ex's were a joke, some preds, etc. its a great setup for 300 ft drags and trails but if your wide open alot i suggest no doing it.

this figures it at a theoretical perfectly round tire, i usually adjust down the tire size by .5 or so to make the speed more realistic

How bad will the acceleration be with 17/36 gearing? Im sure the amount of mods that the quad has done will matter but does anyone have an idea.

Well, I don't know anyone that has tried that particular gearing, but I did try 16/38 when my 400 was stock with just a pipe and air filter. Top speed was awesome but it took way too long to get there. The only place I could ever get into 5th was on a long dirt road.

I guess what i am getting at is im looking for the best all around gearing for the sand dunes and xc racing. I looked at a chart and picked that ratio because it had the highest speeds in each gear. At the time I wasnt thinking that the highest in each gear didnt mean that it would get there the fastest.

17/36!!!:eek2: You would need some serious mods just to pull gearing that high!
