Depends on what quad you have.

Tappet style with screw type adjusters are easy....

Bucket and shim design is alittle more annoying and time consuming.....

adjusting is fairly straight forward on the recon, i own a 98 recon as well as 02 400ex. adjustments can be done with motor in bike.
Remove valve cover, loosen nuts located on top rockers, look in owners manual, and it will tell you the required clearance. get a feeler guage out to the required clearance, and turn the adjuster clockwise. located in center and adjusting lock nut. tighten to the point where there is slight resistance. should be good enough.

You need to rotate your motor until its at top dead center BEFORE you adjust the valves. Failer to do this can damage the valves.

On most hondas there is an inspection hole on the left hand side of the motor case. You open it and rotate the engine until a certain mark lines up in the hole. then try to wiggle the rocker arms with your hand. all of them should be loose a little. If not you need to rotate the engine again until the mark lines up again. The rocker arms should all be loose at this point. If not keep rotating the engine until they are. THEN adjust your valves.

This is just general information from doing it on other hondas. Not sure of the exact procedure on a recon, maybe someone else here can help with that
