oh. here's the content of the post-

Seems that car thieves have found another way to steal your car or truck without any effort at all. The car thieves peer through the windshield of your car or truck, write down the VIN # from the label on the dash, go to the local car dealership and request a duplicate key based on the VIN #.

I didn't believe this e-mail, so I called a friend at Chrysler Dodge and pretended I had lost my keys. They told me to just bring in the VIN #, and they would cut me one on the spot, and I could order the keyless device if I wanted.

The Car Dealer's Parts Department will make a duplicate key from the VIN# and collect payment from the thief who will return to your car. He doesn't have to break in, do any damage to the vehicle, or draw attention to himself. All he has to do is walk up to your car, insert the key and off he goes to a local Chop Shop with your vehicle.

You don't believe it? It IS that easy.

To avoid this from happening to you, simply put some tape (electrical tape, duct tape or medical tape) across the VIN Metal Label located on the dash board. By law, you cannot remove the VIN, but you can cover it so it can't be viewed through the windshield by a car thief.

This is all sad but true. Some dealerships actually ask for proof of ownership like copies of insurance cards, registration or title. Anyone could make up a these documents with photoshop these days. Hell a person could just call Onstar and have em unlock it for that matter…LOL Tape sounds like a good idea!

Oh, I thought it was a Mercedes on “Gone in 60” as well…???

if you are refering to the mercedes theft in the movie, they did get the keys from a guy that worked at the car dealership but they did not go about it in the way mentioned in this thread. the keys for the cars were special keys and only available from a dealership. the guy at the dealership was crooked. he knew the kid buying the keys wasn't the owner of the cars plus knew his intentions of stealing the cars but sold him the keys to make some money on the side. if they were to go about it in the manner mentioned in this thread, it would have been easier for them to steal all of the common late model cars on the list in the movie.:ermm:

yea ive heard of that before. i dont think im going to tape mine though. if somebody wants mine usally all they have to do is get in and drive off. i leave my key in mine 90% of the time. also i dont lock my doors anymore cause if i do and somebody wants in it i will just end up with cut up windows. its better just to not have anything in my jeep thats worth anything. but dumbass crooks would probally still cut the windows to get in even with the door unlocked. i had my console pryed open and tore up. and all they had to do was press the shiny button to open it, it wasnt locked.
