I'm going to buy a "05" 450r in a few weeks. I've read about a few people have problems out of the crank bearings, because honda used a cheaper bearing on the "05". What I've not read is what honda did to fix the problem. Did they switch back to a better bearing or was it just a bad batch of bearings? Regardless I'm going to buy the extended warrenty.Should I be worried or is this something that has been blown out of proportion?

I just brought mine back today for a noise coming from the motor. If you have the warrenty you'll be fine. Go buy it.

There has been a few people that have had problems but seems very small amount for the 450r owners there are. Honda is always good on customer service atleast that you can count on.

awj8074, how many hours did you have on your quad before you noticed the noise?

Just got a call from the dealer. It was the crank bearing that went bad. Honda is taking care of it and it wont cost me or the dealer a thing.

Change to a YZF???????
They have more crank problems than a few certain Honda's.

I was in a toss up when I bought mine and talked to REAL owners at the local tracks, they are fast as hell but do break down more than any other quad.....
Yamaha has been known to have problems with crank bearings. Buy the 450r and the warranty and ride knowing you are covered........

warranty is good as long as no motor mods, i.e muffler, cam , etc.... if mine go, i will re swap the trail tech flywheel back out. :)

From what I have heard there where a few 04's that had the bearing problem too. I figure it came time for a new bearing contract towards the end of 04 and they took the cheaper bid. I have also heard that even IF your bike is out of warranty they WILL cover ALL costs to fix it. I dont know if that is true, but I have heard a couple of people say that.

Stoped at the dealer today to see how everything was going. They have all that parts they need but half of the engine case is on backorder. Guess they called honda and they were out of new motors so they had to buy the motor peice by peice. Now were just waiting on one part untill they can put it back togher. I want it back.

I talked to my dealer, he talked the Honda rep, he said the bearing problems were from improper oil level.

no my oil level has always been correct the guy at the dealer told me the bearings were not pressed into the case like they should of been and it caused them to brake apart

Thats just the dealer trying not to lose any sales. Ask your dealer why this isnt happening to any 04's. Dealers like that pi$$ me off, just trying to blame it on the customer.

I just bought my new 04 450r model in the beginning of February. Should I be alarmed here? Anything I can look for?????

Please fill me in.

I was going to go in next month and buy the extended warranty anyways...

The 04's arent having this same problem. Ive only heard of one person on here with a 04 crank problem and this was probably caused from a part malfunction which is common, this stuff happens. You cant go wrong with an extended warranty. I didnt just because if something goes wrong itll be just an excuse to upgrage.

i was told the warrenty isnt voided untill they can prove the aftermarket part failed and then if it did then it will void the warrenty

kind of like a grinding noise at low rpm's and if you had it in netural when you would rev it up it would hang and grind then go back to normal

Mike back in 91 when I got a Yamaha Warrior I changed the oil the first time and the filter was covered in metal flakes. I was shocked and scared to death, I took the filter to the dealer and the rep was actually there making his rounds to the dealerships in the area. He told me it was normal from machining the cases, and it was imprefections in the metal and it flaked off under heat and cool down. I was very skeptical, and asked him if they would cover any eninge fairlure from this and he told me he would. Well to make this long story short, 8 years later and I never had a problem with the engine. I had some minor flakes in my other quads to include my 450R and so far so good. Just keep up on your maintenence and I think you will be fine. almost everything will sooner or later fail, but I think it is on how well we take care of our stuff.
I hope I eased your mind.
