A couple of my friends took a new 05 450r out on the frozen river (snowmobile trail) yesterday for a test ride because one of them is interested in buying it, the bike was new and this was the first ride on it and after about 20 minutes of easy riding the bike was ran wide open for a few runs (not hitting the rev limit). Just as that was done it started to make a noise that sounded like the cam chain was slapping around and the bike vibrated alot, so we headed for home. We stopped a few times to check it and sometimes the noise was there and then it would go away, weird? Then it stalled and when it was restarted (very hard to kick over) it puffed out some smoke and wouldn't stay running and was VERY noisy!! Then we noticed alot of oil runnig out of the bottom of the air box and it wouldn't stay running at all! I have never heard of anyone having this kind of problem with these engines, has anyone else heard of this sort of thing happening? It was sad to see a new bike like this.:(

A few of the 05 quads had bearing problems that would show up in the first 10 hours of riding.

got a call form the dealer. I droped it off yesterday and they said the bearing went bad. Guess its not just in the first few hours of riding cuz i have well over 50 hours on mine.

Hondas paying for everything there even paying the guys working on it so it wont cost the dealer anything. If it keeps up i would expect a recall on the bearings. They allready have prepackaged kits ready to be sent to a dealer when this problem comes up. They know about it but they dont want to do it to all of them.

I have a 450R coming into the shop tomorrow with oil running into the airbox. Did the oil only come into the airbox or was it going out the exhaust too! Let me know any more details and where exactly it was coming from. Thanks in advance

The engine was not smoking, no oil out the exhaust. It just blew it back throgh the crankcase vent tube into the airbox.

Did you find out what was wrong with it yet? Thanks

When they tore the engine down it looked like the right side crank bearing just fell apart causing metal filings and peices of the bearing to go throughout the engine. They had to replace just about everything in there, it caused alot of damage.

this really does worry me, i dont want to have to spend all that $ to fix something that shouldnt have happened in the first place, do you think they would warrenty it even if it hasnt had the problem yet? i just dont want to take the risk, 2 many aftermarket parts at stake

Not necessarily. I have heard of more than a couple cases of Honda paying for the repairs well outside of the warranty. One case my dealer told me about was some kind of bearing failure in a CRF motor he was working on outside of warranty. When he called the Honda rep he was told "That shouldn't have happened" and that Honda would cover it.

The crank bearing on my 04 450 R cracked, ate the thrust washers and let the crank work around and rub the side of the case. I am very dedicated to maintenance. I change my oil after every race and after every 4 or 5 hours of play riding. I am looking a a new crank assembly, all bearings and seals and a new top end while I'm at it. I figure that I had80 or so hours on it. Almost 2 full season, a 12 hour race and a lot of practice. The P O S dealer tried to tell me that they had never heard of any bearing failures, ever. And no I didn't get the extended warranty. Also I'm being told that nobody seel and crank bearing replcement parts, only assemblies. Got to decide whether to fix the 450 now or be 2 weeks late on the mortgage.

You can get the crank bearings seperate from honda, the crank itself comes with the rod allready pressed in. The only thing you would need for the crank is a right and left bearing and reuse your keyway for the flywheel. I assume when you say thrust washers you are referring to the ones on each side of the bottom end of the rod?

You guys are scaring the chit out of me!! I am trying to sell my 330 to buy a 450r and now I hear all this. Sounds like I should go with an 04. Oh well, I was probablly going to buy an 04 anyways, they are cheaper.

You will always here about the bad ones. Think of the millions that don't have problems.

08-27-2005, 07:21 PM
You will be just fine, just if you ever hear any irregular tapping noises or any oil in the air box coming out of the front breather tube stop the engine immediately and check your crank bearing. It's very simple to do!
