I am attempting to remove my axle and I've only gotten to the point of loosening the big lock nut. I took out the little allen head bolt that locks it down and then started loosening the lock nut counterclockwise like every other nut. It is very difficult to loosen and I'm using about a 3 foot cheater pipe on the end of a pipe wrench just to get the leverage to loosen it.

About half way loose I notice little metal filings coming out like Im working the threads off... am I doing something wrong?
