I am considering fitting my ex with a 440 kit, will I loose reliability? My quad is mainly used for trail riding although I am considering racing at our local speedway.

My cousin had his done and all it does is blow head gaskets.. Its really nice havin to pull start the thing when it gets cold,, but i think most of his problems are from the sloppy work of our local dealership..

if you build it right you shouldn't have any major reliability issues. of course you can't have it be as dependable as stock, but it's not like your going to blow headgaskets all over the place.

dont screw around with the "440 kits, $109" kits you can find anywhere, have a trusted souce do you up a 440 kit, preferably with a heavy duty stud kit and you wont have any troubles.

I ran the 440EX with a 13:1 piston for two years - no problems at all. It would always beat a 450R and did very well with the YFZs. If you do all the other things you need, like the proper cams and hardened rockers, you'll have no problems with reliability. I pulled my piston a few weeks ago and, after two years, it looks very good.

This piston ... thats the *****! with the right fuel it will screem....

Marky, whose 440 kit (sleeve) do you have? Also, I can't remember, do you also have HD head studs? Stock rod? :eek2:

I've had a 440 with atleast 38hp to the ground sense early 2000. Stock rod and crank and i've always really abused it.

I changed the piston once becuase i wanted to raise the compression from 10:1 to 11:1.

and shes still running with 43 hp. so thats almost 5yrs with a 440. I'm truthfully expecting it to blow up sometime in the near future but I dont see any signs. Might last another 5 yrs..:huh ... .. naw

and i never blew a headgasket or anyother problems like that. oh ya and it was hit with 12hp shots of nitrous for half a summer.

I use my sleeve. I dont believe in HD studs (this is going to stir some people for sure), and I ran the stock rod for 2 years with that setup. But, when I go back to the 440 next week, she will have a carillo rod. (two years was scarey enough!)

I got the oversize stud kit put in mine at FDO. Had one of the head bolts to strip out so I put in the oversize studs. So far so good. http://www.markburkhart.com/FDO.html

Bore it to a 426 & get headwork, it will smoke any 440 out there.

Hmm, my 440's NEVER been smoked by anything under 440! Sounds interesting!:eek2: I think there's a HUGE misconseption here! There's a great difference between the $229 IMS 440 on ebay and an all-out engine builders 440 w/ high comp, headwork, valves, guides, cams, springs, etc. I'll challenge any 4?? that's 440 or less anyday.

If I ever do another 440 i'm gonna go with one of these aluminum sleeves. http://www.madmanengineering.com/400ex.htm

Most people are to cheap to go that route though.

I have my next motors topend ready to go with a 92 mm aluminum sleeve. Cant wait to get her together.
