What is it. All I know is that it colors aluminum. How does it work?

Anodizing is a chemical process that works at the molecular level, sort of like chroming. The porous nature of aluminum is what allows this process to happen. When the chemicals interact with the aluminum, an aluminum oxide bi-product is forced to the surface which becomes aluminum hydrate later in the process (makes the aluminum much harder than before). That's the basic chemistry of it.
