Anyone know exactly how to do a valve adjustment on a yfz450? I already have the head taken apart as I am putting in a new piston.

Intake specs are .004-.006 inches and exhaust .007-.010. Thats what my local dealer told me.

That is the operators manual.... You need the service manual.

Service manual (http://www.g2-innovations.com/gentech/manuals.htm)

I would suggest getting the shim kit before you start. Bob @ Magnolia Tractor sells them for a good price.

Also as a tip mark the chain and the cam while Top Dead Center BEFORE you remove the cams to change the shim if needed. It will be easier to line YOUR MARK on the cam and the chain. If not it might take a couple times getting the cams right on the chain.

Don't forget to stuff a napkin or rag in the cam chain area so the little half moon clips don’t fall down in the engine. I have read horror stories of that happening............ PAGE 148 #5 and #8 they will fall in the engine if you ARE NOT CARFUL.

While you’re in there you might just want to do the cam mod. I am sure you have heard but.... if not move the exhaust cam one tooth up towards the intake cam.... then put it back together camshaft caps back on, timing chain tensioner back in and rotate the engine a couple times, set back at Top Dead Center then check the gap.

Hope that helps

thanks (lokiyfz450) that is exactly what i was looking for :D .i just did the cam mod a weak ago ,thats why i was thinking i should check the clearance. did you have to add a shim after doing the cammod or have you done the mod. i only have like 5 hours on the quad

Doing the cam mod shouldn't affect the clearances. You will still be checking the cam with it on the base circle. And I would be shocked if a quad with only 5 hours on it was out of spec. Ours has probably 30 hours on it with 25 or so of them being XC races and my son loves the rev limiter. I just checked ours and they were all within spec. Another guy who races with us and has had his for several months longer than us checked his and they were all ok too. But it isn't hard to check them so go for it.

No it is NOT the operators manual, it is the entire SERVICE MANUAL that I have.

I was referring to Tholt.

I have the YZF exhaust cam with the kick start. It is like the cams are in stock position. But with the cam mod effect.

I am planning on doing the cam mod to the wife’s 450, and I'll let you know!

I will check the gap's before I do the cam mod and after.
