View Full Version : thinking about a quad

I have a yamaha ttr 125 dirtbike right now, which I have been mostly riding in tight trails, lots of mud (all of which aren't legal)

so anyway, I am getting a trailer so that I can go to organized places with trails wide enough for quads

I am not convinced if I want a quad or a dirtbike (if i go with a dirt bike it will be a kx100) for my next vehicle I have been on a few quads a while ago but am probably going to try it out again pretty soon

so my question is what kind of maintenance do you have to do on the 400ex (do you have a lot of engine rebuilds, and other major things)

with the dirtbikes people try to stay away from the high performance thumpers because of the cost of maintenance and other such things and I don't know if it is the same for quads

thanks for the help

I know this may be a biased opinion on which thread it is in, but which would you get if you wanted the least maintenance, and longest life (kfx400 or the 400ex)

first of all honda are known for thier reliability. The 400EX doesnt require a rebuild very often My buddy has a 00 400EX still on the origional piston and rings. The 400ex is tried and true to be very reliable and easily upgradable. as long as you do the usual ( change oil, air filter, treat it right) it will last forever.

mine pings a tiny bite in the winter (the jetting is to lean from the dense air) I really should richin it a little for the winter

thanks for reminding me, with the helmet on I can't really hear anything

but now that i think about it, it pings (just in the real cold, when i rev it)

i have the normal one, and since I got it I have grown almost 6 inch

but I like being closer to the ground when there is a lot of snow
(I live in NJ and we just had that "big snow")

lol mine only pings when i over revv it. i got the large wheel cuzz the normal wheel wasnt tall enuff. my ttr sux a starting in the winter it will only start if the garage is reaallly warm, if its cold i have to spend an hour kicking it over:mad:

I am surprised, I have heard a lot of people's ttr's being hard to start but I have started mine when the temp was 10 degress in the garage

this weekend I am probably goin to put lighter oil and a richer jet in there because it doesn't look like the temp is goin to rise for a while

i would go with the 05, since i wish i had reverse all the time when i trail ride.

these guys are right, with proper maintenance, the ex's are bulletproof. go with the 05 and you wont regret it, but be thrifty, you might be able to find a 04 450r for the same price as a new 05 400ex.

yea but then I would be missing the whole point I was thinking about an 05 (reverse)

local dealers have blowouts on 04's

400ex's dont require much maintenace(sp) at all. just change oil, oil filter and clean air filter. the normal stuff pretty much. i would go with the 04 cuz IMO the 05's are stupid looking. reverse has never been that much of a problem for me. its easy to spin around and if ya cant just get off and push.

actually, if ya got the money for an 05 EX, just go the extra and get a 450! i know i would

If you can get a deal on an 04 I would go for it. The reverse isn't that big a deal. If you don't have it you learn how to ride without it.
To me bikes and quads are totally different animals. There are advantages to each depending on the type of riding you are doing. Having said that its hard to go wrong with a 400EX!

You guys have it right when it comes to the 400. It has to be the best all around durable quad. Just keep the oil changed and keep the DEEP mud out of it and you will be fine. Hope it helps.Later

You can get the 04s cheaper than that, I think like $4300 OTD if you can find any still. I just bought my 05 400 about a month ago, didn't want an 04 even though were so cheap. I wanted a 450 at first but came to realize the 400 is a better choice for me. I don't race or anything and I wanted the electric start and reverse for trail riding so I got the 400. Plus I like the way it looks  (as compared to the 04 400)
