I've seen so many pics of 250r's on here that are modified, customized, and personalized. But you don't see many on here that are restored to bone stock, show room new. I wanted to wait till it was done, but figured I post pics of the progress now. This was started in 1997, and I've poked away at it whenever time allowed. When I bought this quad, the entire thing had a camo paint job, green, brown and black. Every thing was painted, even the crap you don't see. What couldn't be cleaned up was replaced with OEM Honda parts. I could never list all the new parts but here's some of the items, many of which I have yet to install. The motor is brand new, never started, from East Coast ATV. New OEM front shocks, all new plastic with original decals, new seat, OEM tires, bars and grips, headlight switch, complete rear caliper, and as of right now, about 90% of the bolts with the remainder on the way. I'm still looking for a perfect red tank, so if anybody has one, let me know. Also, if you know anybody who has an original Hondaline cover, I'm interested in buying it.

That is amazing. I would not beable to just look at it. I understand why you are never going to start it, or ride it. I wouldn't do that. I would be out riding it every weekend. I belive that they are built to be riden, and they should be ridden. But to each thier own, It's awsome what you are planning on doing. I can't wait to see it in it's compleated glorry.

When you think it's gonna be done?

I lost count quite awhile ago, but I can tell you roughly what I have in some of the stuff.

New motor $1600
New front shocks $500
New plastic $650
New seat $300
New fender decals $100
New rear caliper $300?

Thats most of the big stuff, there probably just as much in all the small pieces I've replaced, such as grommets, brackets, wheel studs and lug nuts, all original Honda bolts, original Honda hose clamps. The list is so long, it took up about 6 pages of notebook paper (front and back) when I ordered everything. If you want a really good laugh, next time your at your Honda dealer, ask him how much the two clamps for the rear brake reservoir hose are. If I remember correctly, they were almost $10 each. :eek2:
That doesn't even count the time involved, every original piece that I used was taken apart and cleaned by hand. But it worth it. :D

What is that white thing on top or the 250r that runs from the front to the air box?

I hope to have it done this spring. Like I stated in my original post, I want to find a perfect tank for it. The one I have is pretty nice but it does have some scratches on the top. As far as riding it, I have three other 250r's and a new 450r, so while there is a little temptation, I sould be able to resist.

That's the regulator for the lights, without this, I believe the stator would push enough power to blow out the lights.

o ok so you dont need it if your not going to run light?

If you're not going to run lights then there's no need for it.

You do not need the regulator for the motor to run fine, but if you wire up the lights without the regulator, the bulb will blow the first time you rev the throttle, this is from experience......

OK, first of all, I know the master is supposed to be black, couldn't paint it since brake fluid will take it off, and I was concerned about powder coating it since the sight glass may be damaged or clouded when put into the oven, but have plans on replacing it with a new unit. Most likely will be another silver one since I believe the black units have been discontinued.

The chain guard should not be black, the charcoal grey is the correct color. I have never seen a black chain guard on an 86-87 model. Keep in mind this is not a repainted motor, it is brand new and that chain guard was on there when it was taken out of the box.

You had better do a little more research, the seat rubbers are OEM 250r. They are the correct short design which was used in 86-87. I'll give you the part number if you need to check. The 400ex and 88-89 use the later tall design, which look like a castle nut. It is very difficult to get the 86-87 seat to latch if you use the tall 88-89 rubbers. This was always a quick fix for a worn latch on 86-87 models since it would tighten up the seat and fender assembly.

You are correct on the zerk fittings, this was the second 250r I bought and it was originally intended to be a back-up race quad. I was beginning to set it up for that, when I came across my third and fourth 250r's, which then became my back-up units. The control arms were already finished so I left them alone.

I have the helmet holder but have yet to install it since I am still purchasing all the correct OEM bolts.

These are the correct top clamps. The headlight does not bolt to the clamps, there is a bracket that actually wraps around the bars. The two top mounts of the headlight go through this bracket and the lower mounts bolt to the side of the stem. The clamps you are referring to are used on 87 and newer models and are used to bolt the key switch and and cover to the stem. I can post a pic of the headlight mounting bracket if you like or you can look at a microfiche for the 86 model. I have a microfiche, I can post the part number if you feel I'm wrong. The original bracket would not be usable with the clamps you are referring to.

My intention when I began building this was to have a quad that was as close to "new" as possible. There are some items that have been discontinued or changed by Honda over the years, such as the new seat I purchased. It is the correct 86 color with only the Honda logo on the rear but has the taller 88-89 foam. This was a situation which I could not control, this is the way Honda sold them. My new rear caliper came with a black mounting bracket instead of the correct charcoal grey. I just have to accept these as they are. But I can tell you, aside from these minor items, this quad will be 100% CORRECT.

And by the way, it is the correct 86 carb. Yes that's the way the fuel inlet is supposed to be.

These last two posts were a response to another member who thought there were a few things incorrect on this quad and wanted to bring them to my attention. He was wrong!
He has since removed his post.:p

That is a beautiful quad, and I am glad to see you putting that kind of effort into a 250r. I agree with you hardly anybody keeps a 250r stock, you will have one of a handful of stock R's.
