View Full Version : 400ex Shift shaft

Hi, I have a buddy who has A 400ex and Where the shifter goes on that shaft there is splines and they are worn off how big of a deal is it to put a new shaft in there?

i never did that on a 400ex, but i'm assuming you would have to take the right side case cover off, and then the clutch assembly off........i had to do that to a Mojave one time.....so that's just a guess with the 400

here's something to try though.......i would try taking if off, cleaning it up, putting it back on and making it as tight as i could get it......and then maybe tack it..........see if it holds up

Thanks I never thought of tacking it, we have tried to tighten it up several times and just end up breaking the bolt off.

I replaced one on a banshee, and on that I didnt' need to take the whole clutch assembly out, just the clutch cover. Just tack it though it will be much easier

you have to split the case halves to change the shift shaft....last spring my friend had to do it..cuz the shaft broke at the splines...so u have to split the case halves...and while ur at it u might as well get what ever motor work done now....check the tolerance on the cylinder...check ur rings...seals bearings..vlaves...perdy much everythign that might need replacement
