Axis rear adj

well i recived my rear axis shock and i need some help im kind of confused with it. there are the big gold locking rings on top and then under it are 2 more silver adjusting rings. why are there 4? i was looking at pictures and it looks like these rings are to stop the compression of the top spring, this is a dual rate shock. is tha what they do? where should i have them at? thanks

the top ones are your preload or ride hight. the other two are your crossover adj. if you move them down they will make the shock stiffer if you are botoming out
