my 400ex will not start. Its totally stock, its getting gas and spark. It will try and start, but won't. could it be because it is cold and the oil is thick. im using honda 10-40 oil. any suggestions

The problem is it is cold outside. You need to put a 42 pilot jet in it. I also hold the throttle WFO and it will start. Do a search, this is a commom problem with the 400ex.

How big is the stock pilot jet?

nah it aint cuz its cold i had a stock pilot with mobil red cap wich is 15w40 and it is about 3dagrees here no problems a lil choke and a lil throttle fires right up and its a 2000

it isnt timing sense its stock you cant adjust it the only way you can is with a timing key other than that there is no adjustment

aaahhhh, its possible it jumped a tooth, timing is easy to check, keep it simple, evaluate and eliminate.

As exrider77 said, check your plug. I let mine set a week after casual riding. Tried starting it and nothing. Replaced the plug and bingo, it fired up.

Yeah I'd bet $10 the plug is fouled.
Although, you might want to pull the jug off and see if the crank is cracked...:scary:
