Try fully disengadging the 4 wheel drive first and see if it goes away. Do you have manual lockers or an auto shift?

check the fluid
if it is dark or smells burnt your too late.

Have you used your 4x4, i assume you have automatic hubs and they are just locked in yet, put it out of 4x4 and backup 10-15 feet

i have manual hubs (warn) best out there. i have not checked the fluid yet but im going to change it anyway just because new is always good. its shifting good no problems there or the clutch. i have been running my hubs locked in because of the snow but i dont thats the noise.

Sounds like its your 4 wheel drive. Are you sure your not in "low 4x4"?

yes i realize you said your noise is coming from around the tranny but for the hell of it check your power steering fluid
when low it makes the noise you described

unlock the hubs and drive it around and see if it still does it. if it goes away when you unlock the hubs, then you need to look at the transfer case, check to make sure the transfer case is full of gear oil, when they get low on oil they will start to make noise.

i know for fact in not in 4 wheel drive. why would check the power steering fluid though?

sure sounds like the standard "Ford" power steering pump whine (you could be low on fluid too).... or your alternator is about to chit to bed.

LMFAO, have you ever driven a 4x4 in "LOW"??? There is no way someone could confuse that...besides, I think he would notice a HUGE increase in RPM's vs speed.

sometimes in the cold on the 4x4 ive used the hubs get froze and dont lock and will wind then when they loosen up will clunk and lock in when you stop...im not sure if on the manual hubs that can happen or what... your tranny might be going too std or auto?
