View Full Version : Difference between 416, 426 and 440cc

I am about to have some engine work done on my 2001 400EX. I like the idea of not having to bore out the engine (IE 416, 426). In reality what can I expect the difference to be between the 3 choices? If price was no factor, how much better is one over the other.
Thanks,
Kregg

That's funny, that's about the 3rd or 4th post I've seen in the past 2 days where you were the first to respond with that same response. If you don't want to help feel free to not reply;)

There is no rule saying you have to reply! If you feel like you can help with the question then please feel free to comment. If all you want to do is critisize people for asking, then maybe you should just click next thread. I did a search, didn't find what I was looking for so I asked.

In my opinion the 416 will perform just as well as the 440 kit...The 440 kit is known to get hot and pull the stock studs out. I have a 440 kit in my 400 i have had no problems whatsoever other than head gaskets...If you go 440 then you should go ahead and get a cam, portwork, crack, rod the whole 9 yards...but i like the 416 kits as well you dont have to worry about getting a new sleeve pressed in or anything..just get ur cylinder bored and slap the piston in...it gives good power as well...i dont know a whole lot on the 426...but my 440 motor is forsale if you might be interested...any more questions you can just pm me...

Thanks for the response! Given your opinions I think I'm back to the 416 kit. Not many people seem to choose a 426, which I guess should be another vote for the 416. Thanks again!

I agree with buddha440ex, in terms of reliability and price/performance the 416 seems to be the most practical of the bunch(very pleased with mine). Although, if money was no object it would be fun to try to build out a 440 or bigger that puts out reliable, monster power and still revs out quickly.. but that's the tweaker side of me talking. :D

My 416ex performed like a champ with a port/polish and Stage2 Hotcam. I loved it compared to my friends 440EX "Torque Monster"

416 JE kit, crf timing chain, sparks valve springs, ported head, HMF slip on, stock carb. Beat a full duncan 440 with duncan motor, duncan pipe, bigger carb. 416s rev faster. This was at the track too. It was close, but i came out on top.

i pretty well agree wuth everyone's replies. I'm kinda insame boat but I'm tryin to choose btween 426 or 440 416 isn't ruled out but I've got a buddy with built 426 by a very well recognized shop(as seen in mags) Its faster than a 400 but he spent 1700 for port work, carillo crank stg2 hotcam, 39mm fcr carb. second ride just after break-in head gasket starts leaking. Ijust cant spend that kind of money. Did he overkill? i like the thought not having to sleeve my cylinder, but the down side to 426 is thats as large as you can go on stock sleeve. Does 416 have a noticable power gain not just a feel.Is the power usable?Iwant to be able to at least scare a 450 if i can't win!I ride primarily trails and will porbably do some x-country racing this year. What about carb? I got a beach race coming up and I want it done for that any reccomendations or advice would be greatly appreciated

I'm going with the 416. Parts will be in this week and I should hopefully have it back running next week. I'm not doing anything else to it besides the new cam and the 416 kit. I'll post my opinion after I have it back.

What pipe and silencer are you going to be running. If it is stock you need to think about letting it breath by getting an aftermarket pipe and silencer. Also what airfilter and airbox are you running?

i have been wanting to go with a 416 or 426 for a while now but if you are going to do it you have to go the "whole 9 yards" like previously stated. pick a piston, hot cam, bigger carb, port and polish, and get a full exaust and you will have a good/reliable machine for the money spent. the 440 is nice but as stated, some people have bad luck such as overheating or head problems. if you are going with the 416/426, do not get hardened rockers or springs cause depending on your riding enviroment, you can have some overheating problems your self.

We are in the same spot right now, we HAVE a 440 big bore w/ sleeve & we're trying to decide if we wanted to do that right now or a 416 or 426, well since we don't have a header pipe, bigger carb, valves ect for the big bore we just ordered a 426 for it instead, plus we are on a tight schedule to get it done before our dune trip in 3 weeks so we didn't want to "rush" our machine guy on the re-sleeve, he doesn't charge us so we let him pretty much taek his time & sometimes it's a LONG time ;)
Sooo anyway we should be getting it today I think & I guess we'll be able to do a review of the 426 :D
It will be tested @ the dunes so we'll see!!!!
Good luck on your rebuild we'll keep you posted on ours :D:D

I Have A Question About A 416 kit

Could You Get By Using The Stock Connecting Rod?

I think that mostly depends on what compression ratio you are using. If 11:1, prob fine, but if 13:1 then look at a carillo or something. C&D Racing (402)614-2508 can give you more specifics...

I ran a 440 kit built by LRD for three years with no problems. Ran like a rocket until the connecting rod broke. I was running 13:1 compression in that motor. I now run a 505 and so far has been reliable for 6 months and out runs yfz's and 450R's all day.

I have a 416 and it rocks. There is not much of a noticable difference from the 416 to the 426. If you are going with the 416, and cam, make sure you get an aftermarket exhaust, slip on is fine, run no airbox lid and a uni or k&n filter, jet it, and you will be good to go. Good luck
