i have a 2000 400ex and its starting to smoke a little i am almost positive its burning oil. i want to bore it out and get some more power but i dont really want reliablility problems. i m thinking about a 416 or a 426 but i heard you should resleeve a 426 and i really dont want to pay alot to do this. i thought about a 440 kit but i have heard many nightmare stories with those and heat and reliabililty. i want to get more power with the bore will a 416 make much of a differance or should i go with a bigger bore? any suggestions on what stuff i should get would be great thanks

id say 416, the most reliable and power too actually i believe. my brother has a 426 and he likes my 416 better than his and says it seems more powerful. and ive rode a 440 and my 416 seems way stronger than it even the guy who had the 440 said hed rather race my fourwheeler because of the power its got compared to his. seems a little strange but pretty much true.

You dont get real big power gains from an overbore, its the higher compression from the piston that gives you the power. If you dont want heating problems, and your looking to spend the least amount, then just do a 406 bore with something like an 11:1 piston and a cam and youll be in business.

Does the guy with the 426 and 440 have the same mods and compression as yours. I know a 426 or 440 should spank it next some of you guys will be saying a 406 is faster than a 465 stroker. As far as reliabity goes if your going to go over 11.1 you should get a hardened rod, bigger head studs, valves etc. I have only have had mine in for about 6 months and have had no problems but my dads friend goes with us to the dunes everyweekend on his 440 and he has had it in since 01.
Oh and the overheating thing I have cruised the bowls at the dunes for hours at a time when it was 100 degrees out side. Go with the 440 if your a duner there a torque monster.

Just ask Rico why he went with a 416....

I did a 426 with mine and after the fact I wish I would have just done a 416.

I am building up a 400ex and almost everyone I asked about this, and I asked a lot of people, said go with the 416. Even Chad who has a 502EX said go with the 416.

mines a 11:1 the 426 is 13:1 and 440 is 12:1, and i didnt say it was faster i said it felt stronger on takeoff.. and they said theyd rather have mine then theirs.
