View Full Version : Painting the Radiator

01-19-2005, 11:25 AM
I am in the process of rebuilding my R and I am re-painting and powdercoating various parts as I put it back together!

My stock radiator could use some new color since the paint is chipped and looks a little wore out! My questions is...has anyone ever painted there radiator? I don't wont to go overkill and paint everything in site...but I thought touching up the radiator would make my R look a little better! Would you use regular paint or would it have to be a special paint?

Thanks for any info!

I think babaque paint or engine block paint would stick

try sandblasting it for a pretty good look, but idk i would clear coat anything after i sandblasted it,or get it cermaic coated, but im not go sure on the idea of the clear coating because that will keep the heat in

I don't really recomend painting your radiator. Most high-temp paints are ceramic, which is a very poor conductor of heat, and it will act as an insulator, holding heat in.

I just used regular spray paint for some touch up stuff. I think if u just spray down light coats it wont hurt anything.

if you insist on painting it, as stated above...BBQ paint

I got sick of the chitty old chipped paint so I just removed it w/ stripper and left it bare and polished up the side plates, I like it:blah: :D

i wouldnt use sand, but a bead blast at pressure no greater then 50 psi wont hurt anything.

after that if you decide to coat it, use either a product made for radiators www.eastwoodcompany.com or leave it natural. spray paint will act as an insulator.

300exrida, yours isnt ceramic coated, its molycoated and will not hold in heat.

powdercoating holds up well, and has not caused an overheating issue yet.
