View Full Version : YFZ winter rebuild

jlhughes750

After a year of racing and riding I figured it was time to tear down the YFZ and hook it up..... Over the course of the year I had added complete frt. and rear suspension from GIBSON and Custom Axis including a Gibson Long Travel XC frt. end with 18.5 inch shocks and a beefy chromoly swing arm with R style brakes!!

After nearly 30 district 6 Harescrambles, the 6 hour at Rausch and alot of riding and testing the bike was lookin pretty beat.. I had run the entire year with no problems so I wanted to go over everything and make like new again.

I'll start tonight by posting some pics of my freshly PC'd parts and I gotta get some pics of the black fenders with a blue flamed out graphics kit!!!!! It should look pretty sweet when its done, i'll post pics as I go and you guys let me know what u think!!

thanks, J

most of the year was spent under a coat of DIstrict 6 slime and grit!!!

Here a shot from the Flying Dutchmen Harescramble

A nice coating of PA coal slime form the Rausch Creek Fall Harescramble 2004........ This stuff really takes its toll on PC and chrome!!! .......and tires for that matter (right rear going down)!

just routine, i had not had it apart all year!!! A few gears looked a lil worn, so I replaced them but other than that it was great.....Of course I freshened up the top end, although it was still lookin great after over 100 hours!!!

For some reason I cant see the top picture it may just be my computer. I was so surprised on reaction/ecatv's job on my suspension rebuild. The next day I got a call saying the revalve and service was finished. I got the suspension revalve done very fast less then 24 hours! also for a great price! Jay do these guys service your shocks? Isn't that the same bumper you ran last year?

the subframe: no powdercoat here, base coat black with clear, i was worried about the heating of the cast alum. so I stuck with paint on this part!!

I had a small crack in the frt. cross member (useless area)....other than that I have not destroyed one yet!!!! I'm not that hard on my machine though, and its never been wrecked!!!

I went with the black plastic with a blue flame graphics kit.

02-05-2005, 09:08 AM
installed the new bearings and sleeves today in the Gibson swingarm......

check out how wasted the old parts are!!!!

jlhughes750
02-05-2005, 09:12 AM
I used all new Yamaha parts for the rebuild. The swing arm has 2 bearings on each side, seals on the inside (engine side) and cap seals on the outsides.

jlhughes750

the Gibson YFZ swing arm with 250R caliper setup.

This is a shot of the bottom of the shock mount/linkage mount. Check out the beefy gussets and the round tube in the center....

jlhughes750
02-05-2005, 09:20 AM
another shot of the swing arm.

in this shot you can see the round tude!! I wish my camera could pick up the welds real close so you can see the art in this swing arm!!!!! The Gibson YFZ swing arm is a real nice part!!

jlhughes750
02-05-2005, 09:25 AM
Here the frame, so far I have the lower Gibson XC arms installed and the Gibson +2 steering stem.....

Like the custom quad stand??:D

jlhughes750
02-07-2005, 01:26 PM
I guess its called trans blue???
East Coast ATV did all the powdercoating!!!

jlhughes750
02-07-2005, 01:27 PM
the a arms are chrome, they have some time on them but still look great, so I left them alone....now that everything is going together I kinda wish I would have got them redone!!

Kilabanshee

Yeah I believe that is the trans blue powdercoat. My friend alex just got his beadlock rings powdercoated at eca the exact same color. This looks even nicer in person! Jay will you be racing on march,13th at flying dutchmen?

let me know how the translucent blue holds up, everyone around here who has a translucent color has it flake off...i also saw one of the old eca yz/ex quads all flaked off...might be a coincidence or something but it sure looks good

jlhughes750
02-22-2005, 08:39 AM
Sorry I have not posted on here for a week or so!!! I got wrapped up in some other projects..

I May be at the Dutchmen race on the 14th??? we'll see..

I got most of the quad together, I'll get some more pics soon!

jlhughes750

its been a while sorry...

heres what I've got done so far!!

jlhughes750
03-05-2005, 08:07 PM
my GIBSON frt. end...

It uses 18.5 inch shocks on this Gibson long travel Cross country frt. end....

jlhughes750
03-05-2005, 08:10 PM
a little closer shot of the rear end and the East Coast ATV YFZ relocator and guard for the rear master cylinder

jlhughes750
03-05-2005, 08:13 PM
my IMS dry break quick fill tank

check out the graphics........too bad the graphics bubbled from all the gas fumes...I guess no matter how clean u think it is?????

jlhughes750
03-05-2005, 08:19 PM
i had a small problem with the peg mounts last year...I did not want to reconstruct the entire area of the frame so we simply removed the stock "nubs" and made our own, threaded them and tig'd them back on!!

jlhughes750
03-05-2005, 08:22 PM
the seat i used last year.
It had alot of racing on it before it wore through.

It was modified with extra foam on the top and sides.
The ECATV seat cover had material added to the sides to accomodate the extra padding.

jlhughes750
03-05-2005, 08:25 PM
this year Matt at East Coast ATV set me up with a new cover from Quad Tech!!!!!!!!!!!

check out the workmanship!!!;)

jlhughes750
03-05-2005, 08:28 PM
The cover from Quad tech has thin foam sewn into it already...its intended to go right over the stock foam.

jlhughes750
03-05-2005, 08:30 PM
I went with a new airbox there really cheap. The old box went most of last year with one mount tab broken off.

I use both the Pro Design and the Sparks airbox rings....

They both work nice and are easy to install.

jlhughes750
03-05-2005, 08:33 PM
I guess I'll show everyone around the shop just a lil...

Heres my ole R!!!!!!!:p gotta have one of these around at all times!!

jlhughes750
03-05-2005, 08:35 PM
Its always good to have a trail bike around for a daily driver!!!

Just while the YFZ's apart!!;)

jlhughes750
03-05-2005, 08:38 PM
its hard to pressure wash when its 20 degrees out, so I keep a clean one around just to look at!!:huh

jlhughes750
03-05-2005, 08:40 PM
my heating problem!!!!!!!!!!!! any HVAC guys want to figure this one out??? It always seems drafty, and i just don't understand where all the heat goes????

jlhughes750
03-05-2005, 08:48 PM
heres two of the reasons my YFZ handles so great for me!!

the steering block is from Gibson and corrects the YFZ stock bumpsteer.......also the tierod ends you see are Gibson...They hold up great and making steering precise!

When the block is installed it lowers the mount point on the inner tie rods and allows the tie rods to follow the arms on a more level plain as they go through the travel.... I added my own steering stops.

jlhughes750
03-05-2005, 08:49 PM
